  1. I got an amiga emulator yesterday. It's scary how well those old games have
    stood the test of time.

Yeah I recall having a good weekend or 3 of fun when I had a PS2 with a
disc of intellivision games (anyone remember 'Shark Shark!' ?).

The only one I have is in German - I guess it could be interesting
trying to translate it. "spose it'd put me back to sleep too.
Fookin' 'ell - in winter ? I'm glad you're the one who lives in the blue
mountains - that'd be cold enough here by the sea !
Apart from the screaming if tying him up succeeded in keeping him put,
you'd be doing well to tie him down in the first place. Besides, washing
it is a waste of water. Besides, that's that much less to pump uphill to
your place. It gets washed once a year whether it needs it or not.

PC games are a constant chase against hardware being outdated - I've no
desire to constantly upgrade the computer - with a console you know
you'll get at least 2 years out of it before it's out of date - you're
lucky to get 6 months out of a PC - and I'm still not convinced the
best games are on PC - all the most popular games seem to now come out
on consoles with the possible exceptions of MMPG's

I'm not into computer games, except solitaire, but we have a genuine

I speak fluent German... I could read it to you....
You city folk are getting softer and softer...
    Spike his drink.
    Use a bucket.
It gets pumped up here whether you wash or not.

BTW, full water cycle goes like this:

[1] Blue Mountains people love dogs and there is dogshit in every back
    yard.

    [2] It rains clean rainwater.

[3] Dogshit soup runs down the catchment into Warragamba dam.

    [4] You drink dogshit soup.

[4] I drink from my rainwater tank.

    Na zdrowie !!!
    So do I...

What recent RTS games for consoles exist?

    Or turn based strategy games?

For FPS sure... consoles are the way to go, but after a while they all
    look the same.

About the best game I can think of that's available for console is
Oblivion and that's not only a couple of years old now it's also got
expansion for the PC (and bug fixes) that aren't available for the
    console version.

    As for 6 months?

Nah... I bought an 8800GTS 320Mb and a Q6600 well over 12 months ago and
it still plays everything I want to play on a 22 inch screen at good
frame rates (it gets about 9500 on 3DMark 06).

About the only game It struggles with is Crysis (and almost everything
    struggles with crisis).

I'll probably pick up another 2nd hand 8800GTS 320 when the card is
about 18 months old and put it in the 2nd SLI slot which will I suspect
let me get 3 years out of the box.

After 3 years the PC is at end of warranty anyway and due to be replaced.

6 Months is only an issue if you insist on being at the bleeding edge :)

Agreed with GS there- the newest games often require newest hardware.
Though my PC was only 12 months old I replaced the CPU and GFX for
Crysis, even then it only allows me to play at a decent frame rate on
medium settings. If you really must FPS there's always Far Cry (Crysis 1
sorta) or online there's counter strike which you get with half life,
another excellent game which I was remiss not to mention.

I can only re-recommend Oblivion, even if you complete the game you can
add a few mods and completely change it or build your own, a tinkerer's
paradise. It needs a good PC but nothing chews grunt anywhere near the
    way Crysis does.

As G-S also alludes to, the NVidia cards allow you to attach a second
one and link them (SLI) which will greatly increase the longevity. 6
months may be 'a while' in PC hardware but the good games still work on
their original hardware as well as the new stuff. It's usually the
software that gets in the way. eg Re-Volt works on my XP install but
stuffed if I can get it to work with Vista :( It's 10 years old but one
of them classic games you just have to play once in a while. Best way to
    chew 128Mb I know of ;)

You left out the bit where my shit gets flushed into a sewerage
treatment plant, gets pumped into large holding ponds full of other
people's shit, which then evaporate, get carried in the atmosphere till
it hits a mountain range like the Blue Mountains, where it forms clouds
and rains untreated shitwater direct into your rainwater tank. :)

Nah... The evaporative process only produces clean water which then
    becomes rain.

Yes, the rain does pick up a bit of the airborne pollutants, but your
shit, and the other peoples' shit does not evaporate, it just gets
more concentrated in them thar hoding ponds as the water component
    thereof evaporates.

Back to school, Nev... Physics and Chem for you, m'boy... :)

    Pfft ! If I want a hard man I'll hire Chopper - rule 1 of management -
learn how to delegate. I *PAY* people to do the shit stuff.
Noice. Try explaining that to DOCs (and getting him back afterwards).
It's still a waste of water.
That makes you reading me bedtime stories even LESS appealing (1)

    JL
1 Although given the appeal of having Gerry read to me at 4am would
need to be measured with one of the doodads they measure(2) the
movement of sub atomic particles with, it's going to be an
    infinitesimal decrease in attractiveness
2 OK "estimate" for the physics pedants (3) and Hammo (4)
3 Given Heisenberg's principle does that mean if we measure the
unattractiveness of Gerry he will disappear in a puff of logic ?
    4. Whatever happened to Hammo anyways ?

Mmmyah. I can recall having to upgrade my PC constantly back in the
dark ages when I was into such things - a new game would always come
out that looked wonderful, then as soon you installed it, it would run
like a dog until you threw more ram, cpu and graphics grunt at it.
    Never failed.

Put it this way, the HTPC is 1 yr old - a core2 duo, 2gig chip with
2Gb ram, and I'd have to upgrade it to play half the current games-
I'd need to update the m/b to get extra PCI-E slots to be able to plug
a higher end vid card in (Intel 945 doesn't even appear on the
supported lists for half the games out there) - which means upgrading
the processor as well 'cos you can't buy socket 478 only 775 with
enough of the right slots (afaict at an hr's digging), and then I'll
need a new CPU, and prob change of RAM (DDR2-800 is prob too slow).
etc etc etc Spend about 2 grand to build a machine that does none of
the existing functionality better in order to be able to play
games.... or spend a few hundreds on a console that will be supported
for new games for at least 18months prob a couple of years.

It just doesn't add up to me. Sure if you had no PCs in your house and
you bought a PC specifically for the job of gaming you might be able
to get 2yrs out of it, but why drop 3 or 4K on a PC just to play
games ? I've got 3 laptops and a HTPC, the logic of me going and
spending another few grand on *another* PC... naah.

I have 1 pc in the house (and quite a number of Apples).

The PC is used for gaming (and that's all).

It cost $2000 18 months ago and still plays everything I throw at it
(even crysis if I reduce the settings).

Oh... and forget HTPC's for gaming, not enough space for SLI.

Get a case like an Antec 900 or similar and put a decent SLI board in it
and a quad core cpu and a couple of 9600GT cards and a couple of gb of
memory and it wouldn't cost more than $1500 (and all that needs to be
changed 2 years down the track is another pair of mid range vid cards in
    SLI).

    That's 3 years gaming for $2000 which isn't excessive.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that gaming on a console isn't
cheaper... I'm just saying it's not as good an experience :)

OK, so $500 vs $2000 for maybe an extra 6-12months - is it 3 times
better ? Probably worth it if you spend hours doing it I guess, but not
really justifiable for occasional use IMNSHO.

So, kinda back on topic - what was that motogp game again (go on - tell
    me it's PC only :)

No, probably not jutifiable for occasional use.

But I'd have to say that $500 isn't all that a console costs either
    (well unless it's a Wii).
    Ummm which MotoGp game?

    *blank look*

I play mostly RTS and TBS games...
