Totally OT but, given I know no one on here has grown up yet...

if you were to buy a new games console today; what would you buy:

    - Wii
    - PS3
    - Xbox 360

I rarely play games now although I used to years ago, back then it was
mostly 1st person shooters (Doom Quake et al) and Car racing games
(some bike ones would be good too). However thanks to the kid it's
become nigh on impossible to do many things I used to do, so some
alternates need to be found :)

If it makes any difference, I have a Vista Home Theatre PC set up so
the Xbox can be used as a media extender (which would be a good thing)
but that's not a make or break functionality (I can get a number of
    alternatives that also do that).

I'm leaning mildly towards the wii - only because the motion based
controller looks like a wild and funky cool thing(TM) - my feeble
brain was thinking my toddler might be able to use that sooner than a
standard controller (and with less likelihood of breakage).

So what say the denizens of ausmoto ?

The XBox360 has some good games, but is fatally poisoned by its
Microsoft parentage, and is ruled out accordingly. Also, there is the
issue of the units continually lunching discs, and Microsoft's
well-publicised incompetence in both acknowledging and rectifying the
faults, not to mention their balls-up at an attempted peace-offering.

The PS3 scores good points by being the cheapest Blu-ray player on the
market, in addition to being a quality gaming platform. Worthy of
    consideration.

The Wii sounds too much like a bodily function for my liking, but comes
with a pretty good rap nonetheless and the interface shows a commendable
degree of future-thought lacking in the other platforms.

So if you're looking mainly looking for a media platform more so than
gaming, the PS3 is an easy choice. But if games might be a bigger
    function, and you'd like a little wow-factor, then it's the Wii. I'd
steer clear of the XBox on the grounds of high incidence quality control
concerns and poor product support, plus the fact that the other two are
at least as good and in many areas better anyway.

my choice, the one you can cheaply Mod and buy cheap pirate games
    for...

dont let the Blueray of the PS3 sway your choice, you have a HTPC, BR
drives will next to nothing in 6 months

Well umm i already have 3 of those and a mac. The home theatre PC is
plugged into the big screen as well.

There just doesn't seem to be the same level of games available for
    the PC as the consoles...

    JL
(feel free to correct me with facts - I've not played games much in
    yonks)

Errm so which of the three would meet that criteria Evil Marty ?
Bloody dear at the moment though - to get a BR drive that burns BR
discs (not just dvd) is currently $500ish. Hopefully it won't take too
    long to come down.

    JL
(BR rom drives aren't too dear though)

OK, well as pointed out by marty I already have the media platform
covered, and I've never been an M$ fan (avoid as much as practical,
although I won't cut off my nose to spite my face...), so Wii is
leading the race so far then...

<sigh> Yeah but going for a ride at 4am when it's raining isn't
terribly appealing, and it's raining a lot lately. Not to mention the
need to be at home more nowadays (hence a desire for interesting
things to do when stuck at home)

Well, at 4am you could read the bike's worshop manual.

When it's raining you could get outside in Speedo's and a bucket of
    carwash and wash it.

The kid? Tie him/her to the carry-rack while you wash/polish/sevice
The Bike. There's never enough time to spend on The Bike.

Games consoles are the inventions of the devil. Do not give in to
the dark side, JL. (Says he trashes huge swathes time on MS Flight
    Simulator ;-)

    We bought a Wii.

There are less 'serious' games but there are more group games which is
good if you've got a few people to occupy.

The teenagers were dubious at first, but have since decided that it's
    actually good.

Having said that we do our serious gaming on quad core 8800GTS windows
boxen so we were never looking at the Wii as an only gaming option.

Oh... and you get endless oportunity for bad Wii puns!

Fk me, JL. There are some fantastic PC games around at the present time,
if anything they're probably 'having a good year'. The only reason I'd
ever buy a console is convenience. If I did, it'd be a PS3.

As for games, a lot of console games get converted to the PC or you can
often get a decent emulator. That said, look at things like Crysis,
Battlefield2, Call of Duty 4, if you like racing there's Grid, Dirt, and
the V8 Supercar games, role playing you can't go past Oblivion, or shell
out for World of Warcraft (eww). Guild Wars is a cheap but excellent RPG
as well. Then of course you have the old favourite RTSs like the Command
and Conquer, Warcraft and a number of others.

Personally, I obsessively play Crysis online. Fantastic fun. It does
need a powerhouse PC to run on full settings though. Above that I
heartily recommend 'Bioshock'. Best. Game. Ever. I've been playing since
    I was 9, and that's not a statement I make freely :)

Hey.. i've been wasting a lot of time lately mucking around with
    "oolite"

its a version of "elite" - did you ever play that as a kid? its
about as much as our old G4 can handle at the mo and we aint about to
go out and get another pooter or PS any time soon :)

worth looking at if you like the original

  19. Christ, I reckon Elite on my old Amiga in the 80s would have been the
last computer game I was addicto. Might have to check that link out
    for nostalgia's sake.

  20. If you have a decent HT setup get a PS3 because you can use it as a blue ray
    player as well.
