Three people killed when deer causes three-vehicle wreck
    By The Associated Press
    (1/01/05) ‹ Three people were killed in a three-vehicle accident after a
deer apparently darted in front of a car that was then struck from
    behind.

A car driven by Eduardo Macias was struck by a tractor-trailer rig after
Macias' vehicle stopped or stalled after hitting a deer on Interstate 35
near Lytle late Thursday, Lytle police Sgt. Frank Reyes said.

"The 18-wheeler didn't have time to move over," Reyes said.

After hitting Macias' car, the 18-wheeler crossed a median into oncoming
traffic and hit a sport utility vehicle, killing its driver, whose name
    hasn't been released.

Also killed in the crash were Regina Montague, 25, of Bandera and Maria
Macias, 9, whose address was unknown. Both were passengers in Macias'
    car.

Montague was thrown from the car, Reyes said.

Maria Macias was the daughter of Eduardo Macias. Her sister Ana Macias,
10, and a family caretaker, Alma Reyna Torres Rangel, 22, also were in
the car and were seriously injured. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Jesus
Martinez, 31, also was injured. All were in critical condition at San
    Antonio hospitals.

Montague and Macias had been dating about a year and were returning from
a holiday trip to Mexico, officials said.

Montague, a native of Bandera and Boston University graduate, was an
intern with the San Antonio Express-News in 1998.

Montague, who also worked for the New York Times and the Boston Globe,
had since left journalism and was hoping to attend law school, said her
    mother, Anna Montague.

    This is very sad news.
All the bunny huggers need to read this. Deer have few natural predators,
thus what few man kills per year help to cut down this type of horrific
    accidents.

In this case, better driving by the trucker would probably have
helped. It sounds as if his excessive speed or following too closely
caused more of the damage than the deer did.

Yes, deer are a nuisance. Ranchers hunting wolves and coyotes to the
brink of extinction have exacerbated that problem. But bad drivers are
an even more important hazard, and have fewer natural predators.

If you don't ride like you think they are trying to kill you, you would
surely be a fool. I am scared to death of both deer and trucks and most
    other road obstacles.

Sounds to me that the animal at fault here was the truck
    driver...

Especially thosee who hit the brakes rather than the accelerator when

  10. That was my thought also...sorry folks the Truck driver
might be an idiot BUT even with a 3sec count you will most
likely hit the idiot who hit the deer...or slammed on the
    brakes.
Anyway it was just cagers...best rid of them.

My friend Bill Fright has made an interesting point.. huh ? Encounters of
the close kind, with deer are becoming more common.. hmmm.. Since we all are
aware that deer have some limitations in reading comprehension, and since
they are free ranging animals.. it's extremely difficult to require
    "licensing" for them..

That being said, the population and traffic of people creates a situation of
conflict.. hmmm.. Maybe increasing hunting seasons or extending limits would
provide some relief .. Relocation of some of the animals is another option..
We all know that they are out there and their habits cause them to be more
    active during the night..

One of the Game and Wildlife officer took the time to discuss this issue
with me, just a few months ago.. There is no provision in place that permit
the department to re-locate those animals..

The upcoming legislative session would be a good opportunity for those who
have interest to engage their representatives on this issue..

Until then, just duck and dodge.. and try to avoid the areas of dense
population of deer during the times when they move about..

I've had a few close encounters with the critters myself, on occasion..
Never close enough to impact, but I damn sure did some fancy dodging to
    avoid it..

    ....

How is the accident the deer's fault? The "didn't have time to move over"
statement is a good indicator that the truck driver was either too close,
too fast, or not paying attention to the road in front of him.

Now.. now.. Bill..You are beginning to react just like Bill Walker.. Stephen
was just being "nice".. Actually. he hasn't been participating on
tx.motorcycles long enough to know the "players" yet.. He does seem to
thrive on "flame wars" and insults, unless they apply to him, of course.. Be
that as it may.. you might want to bear with him and wait until he gets
around to explaining that he is a certified MSF instructor..

That should put him in a better mood .. unless . you ask him any difficult
questions like.. What is the name of the name of the school or agency that
hosts your MSF school.?. or. where is it ? Then .. he gets a trifle
miffed ..talking about "you don't have enough money" or something to that
    effect..

Anyway.. ol' Stephen should find himself a little cliche, on this group..
soon enough.. You just need to exercise a little patience for him to get
good and dry behind the ears.. Regards.. Bill Fright.. you are a
    caution..

I'd have to agree with Stephen here. Valuations of animals equal to or
greater than humans is indicative of bunny slash tree huggers. It
would imply that a hunting season on people would be acceptable...
even if said people weren't bunny slash tree huggers.
