As many here are already aware, on Monday the 6th of September 2004, just before 9:00AM, I was knocked off my bike by a small white Volvo. I was taken to hospital with an assortment of broken bones, and my bike was taken away by a recovery company, eventually ending up in the back yard of Fowlers in Bristol. About a week later, my insurers arranged for it to be collected from Fowlers, and that was the last I saw of it. After I submitted a claim form for the accident, my insurers asked me to forward all documentation etc, which I duly did. This was at the end of September. Sometime in early October, I was told that the bike had been written off, and I got a cheque in the post. At this time, I did two things: I pointed out to my insurers that, as they had all documentation relating to the bike, they should advise the DVLA that I was no longer the owner/keeper of the bike; and I also sent a letter to the DVLA advising that the bike was now the property of my insurers. The bike was insured through Auntie Carole, and the actual policy was with Equity Red Star. I feel that I had, at the time, done as much as was reasonable to advise the DVLA of the ownership of the bike. So why do I now find myself in receipt of a nasty note from the fucking DVLA demanding money with menaces because the bike has been untaxed since the 1st of December? When I bought the bike in April last year, I taxed it for 12 months. The tax disc went with the bike, and if the bike shows up as being untaxed from the beginning of December 2004, then the tax disc must have been surrendered in November. The DVLA should have a record of who surrendered the tax disc, and to whom the payment for unused tax was made. So why are they fucking chasing me? Anyway, I've written to the cunts pointing out to them the error of their ways, in possibly slightly more measured tones...
