Useful Radars?

Saw on the news in France tonight that they'll be installing 500 more
digital radars in France. These will be capable of taking pictures if
people speeding, jumping red lights and, wait for it..., driving too
closely to the vehicle in front.

Now, I don't know about you, but the latter actually strikes me as
being a useful use of a radar.

    Want does the froup think?

I'd rather have police/gendarmes watching than a box that's programmed to
    seek out specific circumstances.

And how do they check if you're too close? Surely it can only be by
    photographing/recording *all* vehicles?

And, finally, it'd legislate almost all the drivers off the road round here.
Either that or record that there's just one 3km long car doing the rounds
    most of the time... :)

Big Brother is Big Brother, they should employ more "flic" and give people
    jobs.

Aye, I'll go along with that. It causes FAR more accidents on motorways
than speeding. All we need now is some cameras that can nuke the
middle-lane cunts & the world will be a better place.

  6. Gimme a bloody Uzi and I'll solve the problem. I HATE TAIL GATERS.

    Ahem.

If some dilly willy tiss pot sits on my tail, I slow to a safe speed.
    Really, really safe braking speed.

That tends to not work here, unfortunately.....

I've got used to it in the car and DGAF if they sit 3" behind me through
villages because I *dare* do 50kmh, but it's scary on the bikes (the bike
also being on UK plates, unlike the car.....)

In 90+kmh limits the tailgating seems to disappear. Which is odd, cos
that's where it seems to appear in the UK....

Strange isn't it. The 50 limit in communes seems to be generally
flouted, and yet I regularly have people bust a gut to get past me out
of town only to sit just in front at 90. The few mobile speed traps I
have seen round our way have curiously been in 70 limits.

I must say that on the good A20 at least (free, but only two lanes, for
an amazingly long distance through the Limousin) the standard of driving
is better than in the UK. The only exception being the kamikaze attitude
to joining the motorway from a slip road. That may be down to the
exceedingly short length of some of them. But a banzai 'Nelson' approach
is the order of the day - foot down and bugger slotting in behind anyone
in the inside lane who can't pull over to give them a free run because
someone else has already grabbed the outside lane.

Nah, I don't think it's that. The GATSO unit is always emitting
signals, so it's probably an easy job to detect when a vehicle passes,
then a gap (as in no reflection of the signal) and then another vehicle
    passing.

All the system needs to do, is to calculate the delay in the reflection
of the signal. Too short, the unit flashes.
Heh. And here. On the periph, it'd be impossible...

Heh, in all seriousness, the French whinge about the cameras, but
they've been accepted as part of life.
Us? I don't think we really have a choice.

So all caravan drivers will be automatically banned. A great use of technology.
Unless a Gatso can distinguish between a trailer and a tailgater.

Possibly if the delay is too, too short, then it'll discount it. So the
lesson is either drive with a good distance between vehicles or really
    sit on their arse.

I thought of bikes this morning. How would it work if there is a group
which are riding in a safe, staggered formation?

Some form of manual check before pressing the "issue ticket" button?

Possibly, but if I'm not mistaken, in the case of speeding fines are
100% automatic and there are no manual checks.

It'll probably be the same for the distance measurements.

It's up to the person that receives the fine to raise a complaint.

Not a problem if it's a rear facing camera.
Ah, I see. It's all relative, no?
