    Mildly amusing.

I really must lurk around rec.motorcycles more often: I've completely
forgotten who are the vaguely sane contributors and who are the deranged
    morons. Which are you?

I have a copy of it upstairs. It's quite amusing, although I haven't read
it in a few years. I'm not going to say what it is, though.

Nope they're socialistic because of all the welfare and wealth
redistribution programs established over the last 50 years by the 2 main
parties who are more interested in grabbing power from the governed by
bribing them with hollow promises of everything for nothing.

Personally I think it's a crap system, but taxes have to be raised
somewhere and if purchase taxes are dropped they'll be raised somewhere
else. I'd rather be taxed on what I spend than on what I earn.

If anything, purchase taxes favour the rich in since the rich have a
larger proportion of 'free cash' to be invested.

That's the point that you're missing.

The company pays its supplier 17.5% VAT on its supplies. But gets to
    *reclaim* this from the Government.

    Here's an example:

    Raw materials 10
    Cost = 10+1.75 = 11.75

    Finished product 30
    Sales price = 30+5.25 = 35.25

VAT return at end of quarter: VAT paid = 1.75, VAT charged = 3.50. VAT
    to be paid to government = 5.25-1.75 = 3.50.

i.e. the company hasn't actually paid VAT on the raw materials so the
consumer is only paying VAT on the finished product and not compounded
    on the supply cost.

And thank God for them. I can't imagine a society that considers itself
civilized not having a welfare system. Sure, some will abuse it but I
would rather that happened than there were genuine cases of hardship
    where people can't survive.

Still, I wouldn't expect a humanitarian attitude to be understood by
    many in the US.

Do *you* lie to your friends (if any)?

Typical short-sighted policy. Oh well, the Indian companies are happy
about it, even if they are paid in $

.... as long as they can keep it hidden from unions and courts...

    Well, that's the theory, obviously...

Since I am part of th people, this suits me much better than a
government that is blatantly and exclusively geared towards its own
    pockets.

You seem to be one of the benefits-receiving guys when over here - they
are the only ones with legally limited income (besides their benefits).

Agreed. They usually seem to wear M16s or whatever is fashionable now...

    We know that.

"you have two choices. Work in slavery or starve!"

We don't even appease the one and only second world country of
terrorists, why should we like the rest any better?

All in all not a bad try, you just need a tad more practice.

I see from a quick browse that it's still available, so I may treat myself
    to a copy.

Or there must be a copy on Fleabay, somewhere .... ah yes, there's a copy
sitting at a quid with 2 days to go.

Are you wearing some special stupidity goggles which make the world look
completely different, or something? Or is it simply that you're tlaking
    out of your ass?

I work for one of America's largest corporations, and as a UK employee I
get a far larger holiday allowance than my American colleagues do,
there's very little difference in my salary, pension scheme, healthcare,
etc... Oh and due it being a normal perk over here, I get a company car
    whereas my American counterparts don't.

Oops, I was too quick to point out one of the Alberta Advantages.

Now, as for Ralph, I kinda like the guy but put Ralph, Alberta and all
of that high priced oil together and I am feeling pretty good. Factor
in it is an election year and I expect to see some of those oil
    royalties.

Edmonton is apparently already spending their's on redoing their
    downtown sqaure.
    Again.
That's according to a couple of disgruntled Edmontonians I met
    yesterday.

Almost all Edmontonians are disgruntled. I think it has something to
do with long cold winters and a really big mall.
