Mmm, who can remember "Silver Machine"?

IASTR one called "Motorcycle & Workshop" - I bought the first 2 issues
then concluded it was terminally dull.

    "Motorcycle Review"?

"Ride"? as edited by Danny DeFazio rather than as published by EMAP

  3. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember saying
    something like:
    That Rowena Hoseason...

So you've never ridden a bike then. Or you have, but your outlook has been
twisted by the pressures of wife, mortgage, kids etc. Part of the joy of
bikes is the one-on-one interaction with your surroundings, forcing the tart
round the bend that she's trying to refuse, but most of it is just sheer
pissing people off. Set the car alarms off all down the street on your way
to work, launch youself at the lights that have just gone green from 400yds
back sort of thing. Do these things and survive, that's the point.

'What's Politically Correct...' all of it is. FFS Mark Williams would be
    turning in his grave.

It's expedient for the business to avoid potential claims, not the same
    as politically correct at all.

Oh, and Mark Williams isn't dead to the best of my knowledge.

He had an article in one of the recent (paper) editions of RealClassic, from
which I deduced that he was, in fact, turning in his grave.

  11. I seem to recall that both UBG and UMG were launched by the simple
expedient of placing them in the newsagents with little promotional
budget (almost impossible today) and therefore logic suggests that the
people buying them were in the shop to buy a different magazine in the
first place. Think you will find that lots of motorcyclists have
catholic tastes (and we are not just talking about buggery here,
Neil). To say that bikers buy different types of magazines is utter
bollocks seems, er, utter bollocks, mate!

Is this any relation to DeFazios of Frome? I've bought MZ bits from

Couldnt agree more. Superbike expose mags (I can`t even recall any of their
names at the moment) is just not something that appeals to me. I`ve never
bought one of those type magazines in my life.

However, show me a magazine with a picture of a tatty old CZ on the cover
and "Z650 gearbox rebuild inside" in bold font underneath and I`m dribbling
all the way to the counter.)

    Horses for courses.

  16. my final thought:

shouldn't the buyers of a magazine have the final say and not a bunch
of accountants - and if a magazine sells out but then gets less and
less shelf space because it produces less comparitive revenue than
other titles, surely something is very, very wrong!

Thus spake Bob Scott unto the assembled multitudes:
I remember that one. IIRC it only lasted two issues anyway, though I may
be wrong; I'm sure it had a very short, and indeed terminally dull life.

I said it was utter bollocks to say its utter bollocks that people
WONT buy other magazines, read the sentence again and you will find we
    are in agreement - hurray!

ANd then u add a bit of logic and say fans of the UMG used to have to
go to other shops to buy it and prob bought other mags in the same
    shop AND not WHS.

Hence someone calling WHS arrogant and stupid seems about right!

If WHS were a bit more open there would be a much more diverse range
of mag's on the shelves BUT the large publishing co's have things set
up so that it is impossible for the small publisher to get his mags on
the shelves unless he spends huge sums on promotion.

No doubt, you will find the same kind of cartel/set-up in many other
    areas.

    The Toaster Guest

I was a big fan of Bill Fowler's UMG. I wrote several articles after
he passed the reins over to the now infamous 'gang of three'.

Bill wrote all of his editions himself, of course, or mostly, anyway.

For real enjoyment, try www.realclassic.co.uk for the older jap stuff
and everything else that is more than 20 years old. It's not quite
UMG, but it's the closest I've found anywhere. It's a web site with
daily atricles and lively message board with nice folks on it. A paper
mag has sprouted from it, edited by Frank Westworth himself.

Bob Pickett also runs a site which is trying to follow in the
footprints of the old UMG site too, with some of the old lags on it.
    www.bobpickett.co.uk I believe, but don't hang me...

    Happy reading.
