He seemed to know within a few seconds of the shots being fred that
friendlies were in that area. Shame he didn't pass that info on sooner.

Yeah, but in Vietnam, no-one could see anyone with anything like ease. Out
in the desert is a different thing, although apparently not any safer.

  3. He was probably being hammered with complaints within moments of
the attacked unit's opening a comms link back to base.

  4. Having just seen the clip on the news, I can only agree.

They queried and queried and were repeatedly told by their controllers
    that the vehicles were hostile.

Fucking Yanks could only hit a barn door if someone painted a Union Jack
    on it.

They might also have asked themselves why hostile forces would have bright
orange "rocket launchers" on plain view strapped to the top of their
    vehicles.

I sat and watched the whole clip on the leak website - fifteen minutes or
so. I couldn't work out one of the things that seemed wrong: and then the
Beeb newsreader pointed something out when I watched the news report. The
controller was talking about there being no friendlies in a *different* area
altogether. Plus, from the dialogue, it was all very "well, they look like
they are hostile". Not verbatim, but you get my drift. One of the enquiries
stated that the rules of engagement were not followed.
    Or a maple leaf.

  10. I'm sure you used to be more contructive when shooting people down.

  11. This is true. I also heard on the TV last night from a US General
quoting losses that it was over 30% by friendly fire in Vietnam.

The joint forces (UN NATO) are still waiting for a common IFF
    transponder.

The comity sitting to decide on what supplier to award the contract to,
against what quote, against what spec, haven't come up with an answer
    yet.

I believe they were originally tasked by 'joint commonality procurement'
    just after GW1.

You'd probably expect this more from other Brits though, & according to
the news last night, 4 of the 7 friendly fire incidents where Brits
were on the receiving end involved other Brits doing the shooting.

    Everything's "classified" in the military.
    Only the level is important.

    Still classified though.

Which means that I can neither confirm nor deny that I heard a bit of
the audio clip on BBC World Service Radio but oddly enough I can
confirm, or deny, that I heard the announcers comments about it.

  19. And the reason was.. ?

(It surely can't be for technological reasons - there is nothing on
that video that shows anything particularly new or outstanding - it
looks pretty much identical to the PC games I was playing 10 years
    ago!)
Why would this be considered 'important to national security'? It's a
video of a minor friendly-fire incident that reveals very little in the
way of technology, terminology or tactics.
