The brute wouldn't start. Eventually I found out why: no fuel. So I
put some fuel in it, and found out why there was no fuel in it.

Russian fuel hoses: no better than Ukrainian underpants.

    Fuel hoses I have bought:

Black with a cotton braid - cracked after a couple of years but only
leaked where it was bent, i.e after putting the tank back on the bike.
Green fluorescent - seemed to be petrol-soluble so shrank and hardened
    after a month or so.
    Goodyear from Halfords - perfect.

My tame oldBMWfreak, who is currently sweating over the Ural at this
end, appears to have pinned the problem with this one down. The
electronic ignition rotor/interrupter callitwhatyouwill has gone
wobbly. Being Russian, it is made of several parts and they habitually
come unglued, it seems. This gives rise to the symptoms ours was
    displying - will/won't run, will/won't start, will/won't spark, will
die in the middle of junctions, that sort of thing. It could explain
why it would run WFO or nothing I guess, with the speed of spin being
sufficient to keep all the components in the right sort of place.

Quite how he found the problem, he isn't letting on yet, but mebbe he
will when I present him with the new one. Then once the beast is
running, all we have to do is MoT it.

What's wrong with the clear plastic with the internal reinforcing
crisscross braid? I've used that for years with no problems whatsoever
    - available anywhere and cheap as chips.

It's an incurable disease. I know someone with two Ural outfits and a
    Ural solo.

As a former Beetle owner, I wouldn't touch the clear reinforced stuff
with yours. In a VW application, it age-hardens, cracks, and sprays
the interior of the engine compartment with a fine mist of fuel
    droplets.

    A few points:

The Beetle is air-cooled, and there are some quite hot bits in there.
The cooling fan draws its air from the fuel-misted engine compartment
and blows it over the hot bits.
The cooling fan also supplies this stoichometric mixture to the cabin,
after warming in the heat exchangers.

You're bringing it to Chimay, then? It knows the way, it's been there
    before.

they're shit. Job done - fault found.

For vehicles associated with the Caspian Sea, you really want an
    Orlyonok.
