Reference CB400T oil filter cover nut.....

Thanks for all the suggestions - the 6 sided socket did the trick. I'll be
sourcing a set of those then.

I can highly recommend this set:

    in-impact-sock/path/air-impact-socket-sets

I use them for pretty much everything, with & without rattle gun.

I bought a rack of Snap-On six-point Flank Drive impact socket decades
ago, long before I had any means of driving them apart from manually.
I used them for rounded, corroded, nadgery tight bastard fasteners and
they put up with being hammered on to oversized heads very well. The
nuts took some punching out afterwards, sometimes. They are, indeed,
    the dog's danglies.

Once you've got them (Machine Mart or Halfords Pro are prolly the
easiest decent gear to lay your hands on for sensible money) then don't
use anything else. I'll only use 12-point stuff in specific situations
these days - like really tight access stuff, where I'm struggling to
swing a ratchet or to get on it in the first place.

6 points that drive on the flats - there's no real alternative.

Heh. Forgot about the old Denovo, but was looking about and happened
    upon this :

On a slightly more socket related note, I took a look at that set of
UJ sockets I mentioned a while back, and they are indeed metric, from
    10mm to 19mm in 1mm increments.

I'll let you and the speedyspic duke it out ..
