Unreliable Italian exotica

    I might look for something to pose on. Preferably a bike.

    916[1] or Mille[2]?

    [1] Reminds me of when I was young and it was the bike I wanted[3].
    [2] Probably a better bike?

  2. 916 if you want to be able to say, 20 years from now: "I had one of
    those." Or, better still, "I've still got mine."

    Mille if you actually intend to clock up the miles.

    I have seen the same Mille racing in Rehm track days and taking Mr. Dago and
    Mrs. Daga from Barcelona to the IOMTT. And back.

  4. To pose on, a 916 or 996. They are, IMO, the best looking bikes ever made.

    If you actually want to ride it for more than a couple of miles a week, a
    Mille (or Tuono).

    I had a Mille for 3 years and would still have it if my mechanic hadn't
    written it off. I may well get another. It only became uncomfortable
    riding from London to Scotland with a rucksack (it was an "R", nowhere at
    all to put luggage. If I get another it'll probably be the dual seat
    version so at least I can bungee a bag onto the back seat). Commuting
    through central London was no problem. A mate has a 996 and is selling it
    after a year because it's too uncomfortable, and he only uses a bike for
    fun, he's a carpenter so his work transport is his van.

    The 998 doesn't have the big holes in the sides of the fairing. it's
    all flat.

    happen. I always finishing up selling every car or bike I want to keep
    forever.

    Yeah. I give myself three months before I sell it for a Fazer. Despite
    my youthfulness, my back is not great due to my line of work, sitting at
    computers too much.
    So, how much does he want for the 996 and is it red? I understand they
    are worth about a tenner for a quick sale these days.

    How does that work, surely newer = more expensive?

    Actually just had a look on Bike Trader and pissed myself at the prices.
    One dealer wants £3795 for a 1998 916 Biposto. Parkers (which I find
    high anyway) suggests £3015. It's always the same, people seem to think
    things are worth more than they are. Then again, it just takes one ****
    to buy it.

    Very true. They also didn't have the seat vents nor the
    hole in the front v-piece due to the narrow heads.

    But from an outline point of view they are exactly the same.

    Not really; the market dictates the price. The trouble
    with the 996 is that it was a stop-gap between the
    original "classic" 916 and the last-revision 998.

    You'll be hard pushed to find a decent 916, as most
    of them have either been dicked about with or have long
    since expired, so you'll be paying top dollar for
    something that really isn't worth it.

    There are plenty of 996s about, and a 2000 996SPS with
    Ohlins all round was a £15k bike in it's time but can be
    picked up for £4.5k - £5k for a decent one. There will be
    cheaper 996S models out there but they had Showa rather
    than the more desirable Ohlins. Not that it will make
    too much difference.

    You'd be hard pushed to find a decent 998 for less than
    £6k right now.
    That 916 would be one of the very last made and is not an
    unreasonable year - avoid anything 1996-97 unless you
    *really* know what you're looking at. If it's in completely
    standard trim with a very thorough history and money-no-object
    servicing then the extra £600 is worth it.

    Ducati prices for the 916 line seem to bottom out around
    the £3k mark. For some reason people think they're worth
    paying the money to have an iconic bike and thus they demand
    a premium. Whether you think it's worth paying that premium
    is irrelevant.

    If you want a Ducati that will give you a lot of bike for
    your money, buy a 999... just don't tell anyone you own one.

    I have the most immaculate R plate 748SPS sitting here at the moment,
    the bloke won't sell it but reckons it's worth well over 4500 quid. I
    think he'd get it too.

    It's lovely and has all the trick bits thrown at it, but I rode it last
    night and think my SV650S goes better to be perfectly honest.

    Oh yes, the silhouette is the same, I just prefer the flat sided look
    of the 998 lower fairing.
