    G'day Folks

I have a bike that appears to have been illegally imported as it has no
compliance plate and DOTARS has no record of it. (it's a long story....).

The question is, is there any way I can get this bike registered? Or maybe
just find a similar crashed one at an auction and use this one for parts....

    Any help/insights appreciated.

    cheers

Contact the RTA and they will be able to direct you to the right people to
get it sorted. There should be some information available online, but
nothing you couldn't find yourself if you actually had a look around!

No comp plate....you're in the shit.
You could go one way and approach the local importer of the brand, getting
them to state that YOUR bike is EXACTLY like the ones they imported
themselves and complies with the standards of the time.
You'll need plenty of paperwork for that, evidence of import (and possibly a
Customs Statement to say that the vehicle was imported as a whole vehicle,
not bolted together out of a crate of parts imported as "used vehicle
    parts"), names/places/faces etc....what you're after is a "Letter of
    Compliance".
Very messy and a test of endurance (dealing with public servants wrapped in
    red tape).

Otherwise buy a wreck/frame WITH an AUS compliance plate still attached, of
the same model, then swap engine and other stuff across.
If possible (models/years matching up etc etc.), it'd be the easiest way.
After that a RWC is all you need here in Vic, other states might ask for an
    engineers report.
If the frame you buy comes off a bike which was labelled a write-off
(commercial write off that is, structural write-offs have the compliance
    plate withdrawn)
BEFORE about July 2003, you will NOT need a Statement to say that you've
only used legally obtained parts (called a ViV-report here in Vic) in order
    to get it registered.

Dunno about bikes but I know someone in QLD that had a car without
compliance plates..It was a recovered stolen vehicle and thieves had been in
the process of reinventing it..He had to carry around some papers in the
vehicle stating that it was inspected by DoT and also something from the
police saying it was not a vehicle of interest
Not sure if it will help you out as its an import
    Mick...

    of
I think this might be the easiest option, we'll see what the auctions can
    offer up.

    Thanks for all replies!

Well, you'll be competing with allthe other buggers doing the same
    thing.

    don't expect a bargain.

Never had one on my Guzzi (81 LeMans II), was never asked, and it was never
a problem at rego. Of course, YMMV. ;^)

The Guzzi had been privately imported, but still met Oz (NSW) registration
    requirements.

It was pre-85/86, therefore pre-ADR and Compliance plates.
    They HAD to register it.

  10. I have owned four bikes, not one of them was built after 1984 and all
of them had ADR compliance plates. The oldest was a 1976 Honda CB200.
You are thinking of the exhaust system one stating the noise
measurement, not the chassis one stating ADR compliance that all bikes
and cars have had since the early 1970s.

Yeah - the compliance date cutoff is 1975.

  13. I had a '78 Ducati and a '79 Triumph with no compliance plates. A mates
'79 Trumpy did have one however.

  14. Yeah, dad had a 2002 Falcon with no compliance plate either. Talk about
    quality.

  15. My 98 model shaped Jeep is complianced two months before they were
released so apparently it's not. My 88 Trans Am is registered as a 96
(cheaper green slips!) 'cause that's what the compliance plate says.
