Unmarked Car: M6 J15ish

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Doesnotcompute, Oct 10, 2003.

  1. Travelling back north around the J15 area I noted a car about a mile
behind traveeling at a considerable rate of eek, headlights flashing.

Suspicious I eased off into lane 2, an awaited. Sure enough, about 200
yards behind me (and other traffic) blue lights appeared in the front
grill. Car continued to barge it's way through the traffic.

What surprised me most, was the fact it was a Toyota Avensis, either
very dark green or black (too dirty to tell) and was a T plate. I'd have
thought that was getting a bit old for unmarked motoway plod, but
    well, apparently not.

Doubt it was a traffic car. They'll use all manner of bland cars for
    surveillance work.

    All manner.

Going through Bethnal Green in traffic one day and right next to me this
banged up piece of shite cage lights up like a christmas tree and with
two tones blaring pulls out of the traffic off up the road.

Not yer average panda car obviously and prolly not yer average wooden
top driving it either thought I.

    how great Moto Guzzi's are.

More like 60s - it was the panda car of choice when I was a kid. Although
in Monmouth they seemed to prefer small vans like Minis and Escorts.
Easier to clean I suppose after some drunk has spewed in the back.

80s was the era of the Austin Mini Metro.

I remember a Morris Minor van being featured in the car mags some years
ago. I believe it had a 2 litre Lancia engine fitted. Used to do 0-60
quicker than a Porsche 911 IIRC.

Used by a window cleaner - had ladders on the roof and all.

A mate of mine in the 80s did the works on an ex-GPO Minor van.
Daimler 2 1/2 litre V8, Jag back end and all in polished alloy and
chrome. Full dralon interior (front and back), all beautifully fitted
and deep buttoned - in dark purple to match the metalflake paint job.
He never had ladders, though. Just loads of trophies ;-)

JP is hinting at what I suggested earlier - not TRAFFIC i.e. some other,
maybe clandestine, section of the civilian or military police services.

Pip had a fit and wibbled.....
It's quite easy to fit a rather large engine into a Minor. Mainly
because the Moggy Minor'sengine bay was originally designed to house a
flat 4 engine. Alec Issigonis and his chief engineer had a prototype
running for many years that was a Moggy bodyshell housing a flat 4
engine driving a 4WD transmission. It was the only vehicle to make it
up the driveway through snow to the Austin Drawing Office in the severe
winter of 1963. Sadly, it was deemded as folly, and never got close to
production owing to high manufacture costs.
