Universal silencers

Anyone any experience of universal silencers. My genuine item gave up the
ghost yesterday on the M11 whilst I was on my way back to Suffolk. It was
great fun filtering through the near stationary traffic approaching
Braintree on the A120. I dread to thing what a tin of nails it must have
sounded like without the deadening effect on sound of my helmet. Anyway,
back to the question, are these universal things noisy (can't be noisier
than what I now have!) and are they really universal. I don't see how one
pipe will fit all, not physically fit but in terms of performance, fuel
consumption etc. My bike is a 1982 Yamaha SR250, and I am reluctant to
spend over £150 on a replacement OEM silencer due to the age and general
condition of the bike, even assuming I could find one.

    Thanks Colin

I had already seen that one and it is in my watch list. I have a feeling it
will go way beyond my budget anyway being new, which is what let me to think
    about the universal ones.

The term "universal" should be defined as "doesn't really fit anything".

They can be a handy stop-gap though the quality of the construction and
    plating is highly variable.

I ran a couple on my Morini 3 1/2 and they barely lasted the winter before
the baffle came loose in one and the bracket broke on the other, while both
were going rusty. They were also louder than standard, for no performance
increase, and the engine wasn't happy at idle until I reset the carb balance
suggesting that they weren't a matched pair.

I replaced the universals with replicas in stainless, that still cost less
than the originals and the engine was much happier.

IME standard or replica is a much better option than universal.

    I hought you might have!

If you haven't already done so, googling for "motorcycle parts finder"
(UK pages only) throws up a few possibilities.
