Does anybody know what can be used in place
of the actual UNI brand of filter oil? In the old days
I just oiled filters with what ever I had in the garage,
    10w30, 10w40 etc. But with a motorcycle filter I'm
wondering if it needs a different type or weight specially
    formulated for bikes.

Chainsaw oil is a good substitute, if you can't get the Uni refresher oil.
You'll want to find an oil that has "stickyness" to it, so that it catches
    the dirt & dust particles.

Thanks. I ended up getting a K & N kit with spray filter oil and cleaner.
Probably still paid too much for the name!

I've had a problem with the cost of air filters on several of the
motorcycles that I've owned.. After giving it a lot of thought, I commenced
washing my filters in a solution of kerosene.. After the kerosene wash, I
blow the filter out until it is reasonably clear of the kerosent.. Then I
wash the filter in a dishwashing detergent.. After rinsing in clear water, I
blow it out again till it is almost dry.. Usually there will be enough
kerosene residue left in the filter for lubrication and it is tacky enough
to trap the particles which are attaracted to it.. After the water has
completely evaporated, I will then re-install it in the breather.. Works
fine for me and it is a real savings in the cost of filters..
