Is it me or do some car drivers have a thing about bikes filtering? I have
always (26 years) let bikes through and not really noticed that other don't
till I started riding a bike.

Typical example was this morning, a young lady in an MX5 in the outside lane
(just) on the phone, rabbiting away and holding up four bikes in stationary
traffic... now was this just unawareness or do people actually block bikes?

They do. Not many, but some do.

Then there is a larger group who just don't notice, or do but don't
deliberately get out of the way.

Then there are the helpful ones. Give them a nod or a wave.

I always assume they just dont notice you.

I think this is a sign you should have a louder exhaust

There were a few people who used to try and block my bike from filtering
on my way from Flitwick to Slough every morning. These fuckwits were
later easily identified by the lack of one door mirror, or a broken rear
    light cluster.

    Probably yes, and yes.

Just remember it's not paranoia, they really are out to get you,
    seriously!

Just makes it all more appreciated when a cager makes the effort to move
    over and let you by.

    Hope that helps.

    No, and yes.
    bikes?

    Probably, and yes.

I have also had the occasional driver who observes me in the mirror, and
deliberately moves to the right as I slowly and conspicuously come up on the
outside (on one memorable instance, a driver pulled his cage almost
completely onto the RH carriageway right in front of me. He took exception
to my earlier sounding of the horn when he had cut me up).

"Get out of jail" space is vital when filtering.

  9. Both, but the former is much more common than the latter.

DWIW, if I'm in the car, I *always* move over for a bike. It's
encouraging to see how many acknowledge that with a wave, as well.

Some are unaware and some are cunts. And if you're unluck enough to be
riding a slower machine some will do everything they can to overtake you
just to prove that they can.

Some do, not many. I've had more people move over than try and block
    me - but some of the "blockers" like to leave it to the last minute;
there's a transit somewhere with a toeslider shaped scrape in the
drivers door and its wing mirror on the side of the A38 ...

  12. Me Sir! Me Sir! I don't do it Sir, I get out of the way!

I've been doing a bit of backwards and forwardsing recently inna van, to and
from London, and 'undreds of bikes go past. I make as much room as possible
but I do call them all cunts for not being stuck in a van.

Steve Parry let forth with a mighty belch and uttered :
As are bar end mirrors on clip ons and most recently I discovered just how
tough GTR panniers are and how flimsy car door skins have become. The boom
the skin made as it popped in was loud enough to be heard even with ear
plugs in. I've gone past her since, she now moves out of the way of bikes,
    not in.

Yes some do, as others have told you. However if they move to block you
then they generally leave room on the other side of the car to get past and
make a suitable hand gesture as you ride off.

A strange one I had recently was when filtering on my morning commute up the
A1. Traffic was down to 10mph and I came across a guy who was blocking me
.... well, what he was actually doing was driving with the centre of his car
perfectly lined up with the centre line of the dual-carriageway.

I don't think he was blocking me specifically, because he was already in
this position when I saw him. I sat behind him, he looked in his mirror and
saw me then he tapped the mirror and carried on driving up the middle of the
    road.

Unfortunately my junction came up at this point. Unfortunate because I was
genuinely fascinated by what the hell he was doing and part of me wanted to
follow and see how it all turned out for him.

There may have been a point to that story, but I forget it now - where you
    talking about something?

My car ride to work often involves queuing traffic and I try to keep an
eye out for the more hardy bikers that commute alongside me. I move over
as far as I can but rarely get a wave 'thanks'. When on my bike, I wave
to everyone who makes an effort to move aside and let me pass, which is
quite a good percentage of cagers in Northants, I'm pleased to say.

I often wonder what the people who block bikes or generally cause them
danger are thinking. Are they trying to kill someone? What would their
lives be like if they did? Would they give a stuff? It's a depressing
    thought. Sorry.

    U all ride safe now, y'hear ;o)

My guess is that there is one of three things going on:
    a) they think the bike filtering is taking an unecessary risk and are
determined to 'save' the rider from himself...
    b) they think the bike is breaking the law and they are going to stop
    it.
    c) they are fucked if anyone's jumping the queue when they're late.

I doubt they are trying to kill someone, but when people get angry and
defensive they don't tend to be either reasoning or reasonable.
