I'd prefer a bottle of that Durif. It's not often a poor student like me
gets to drink an £8.50 bottle of wine.

If you look up the Wyndham Shiraz[1], that inspired this thread, there
is no mention of fizz either.

Interesting. Looking through the rest of the thread, mention was made
of Banrock fizzy red. There's 4 bottles of that in the cellar and,
having checked, they have champagne style corks, which I was looking
for on the Wyndham and de Bortoli bottles.

OTOH, Finca Muñoz 2002 Tempranillo[1] is shown as a still red, but
the last couple of bottles felt slightly sparkling.

  4. Whilst you're arguement is valid, Statto is correct, it's the wrong
    bottle shape :(

    however, this lot do it:

Yeah, I know that now. I found it on the winery website once I'd looked for
durif under grape variety. I hadn't come across the variety before.

I thought they were allowed to use "Methode Champenoise [1]" on the
    label instead?

[1] I was going to apologise if I'd mis-spelled this, but I changed my
    mind, it's only French.

Quite right too. Used to really annoy me, things like that. In the US
they even refer(red?) to their own stuff as 'domestic champagne'.
As someone else poionted out, better at what? For UK-ites, they may be
better VFM, I suppose, but ultimately you'd have to look at a
particular example of each to make any sort of comparison.

You seem to be making the mistake of thinking that 'champagne' is a
particular wine. In fact there are many different types of champage,
some made from single grape varieties, some from several, some from
single years (i.e. vintage), some from blends to try and make it taste
    the same each year.

Then there's the different sub-regions, which can also make quite a
    difference, and the different producers.

So there's probably as many distinct champage wines as there are new
world sparkling ones - try them all, then come back and tell us which
    are better.

Oh, and while you're about it, be sure to sample all the other French,
Spanish, German and Italian sparkling wines as well.

    Indeed.

Recently I've drunk a pleasant 1999 Cremant de Limoux which at £9.99 a
bottle is very good value. [1]

I've also been surprised at the cavas coming out of Spain. Sub £4 for a
    quite pleasant aperitif.

[1] no doubt only 3.5 euros in Ace's local Casino

Heh. We do drink quite a lot of Crémant d'Alsace, but in fact most of
them start at around 5 or 6 Eu/bottle. Some of the other regions'
sparkling wines are cheaper, but generally not so good.

    Ace expressed the following:
I would never make that mistake. I drink a lot of wines (hic!) from a
variety of countries and a wide range of grape varieties including
champagnes, Cava and sparkling wines (sparkling Shiraz is weird but
bloody nice). I do like a lot of what I drink from France and I've also
noted that some of the Australian wines are starting to be priced above
their quality level. However I've recently taken delivery of some Brown
Brothers Tarrango at about a fiver a bottle which was lighter with less
tannin than the usual Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz's I have tended to
buy in the past. Very drinkable with a hint of pear drops. Jilly Goolden
    eat your heart out!

I'm trying my best, but people are starting to think that I'm an
    alco....and alcoho....a piss head.

Just spent a week in the Alsace region of france - more wine testing
than you can shake a stick at - if only I could remember the names of
    the good ones!
