I can just about stand country, but not keen on western. I despise
reggae. Opera is cool in a 'lets put on something totally
inappropriate' way. Heavy metal just sucks dead goats cocks.

I think that most people here think my music tastes are a bit strange
for a bloke my age cos I like a fair bit of current chart stuff and
hardcore dance music. I counter this by arguing that the vast majority
of what they listen to is made by chart musicians of the past, the same
musicians who people 20 years older than them thought were crap. I moved
onwards, and can't understand why some folk are stuck musically in the
era when they first discovered the delights of music.

I first discovered music properly towards the end of the 1980s. Since
then I've decided I wish I had been able to pay more attention during
    the early to mid 1970s. Yes, metal is my primary oeuvre of choice;
followed mostly by blues and classical. Am I unusually weird?

  7. Hardly. People like the music they like and that's it really. The
amazing thing is that music keeps mutating and developing and tastes
simply follow that development. I long ago [1] gave up trying to
explain or justify my musical tastes [2] as they are all over the shop
[3]. I try hard not to write off entire genres of music as there is
always something that pops up which I find I like.

I do wish I could get into classical stuff though - that's more a
knowledge thing than a dislike of the music.
I think people get into a rut of liking a type of music that they
strongly identified with when they were young. The rut then becomes a
trap. Also people are notoriously conservative about things like music
and get to a point where comfort and familiarity is easier than
experimentation / ongoing development. I have found this creeping up on
me as I do struggle to find a fair slice of the stuff in the Top 40 of
much interest these days - if I even know what it is! I have also been
wallowing in nostalgia with the Police and Duran Duran Greatest Hits
albums! I can, however, chuck in a decent slice of contemporary stuff
alongside them though - I like a fair amount of black, UK urban street
music (grime?) which would probably horrify those who make it. I can't
quite carry off the patois, trainers, hoodies, baseball caps and
    blingtastic jewellery :)

[1] back to teenage years when I was an avid watcher of the pop charts
    and purchaser of single records.
[2] principally to my parents but also to friends at school.
[3] helped by having access to a DJ's collection of the most amazing
dance and disco music which are probably my favourite types of music.

Like most of the replies I enjoy a wide range of music, from the 1600's
to some current chart stuff, Kaiser Chiefs particularly.

I guess getting into classical is like coming to jazz, you need the
right door and then to just allow it to flow without trying to make
    sense of it.

Paul, if you liked Queen and you're trying to find a way into a
classical style try listening to The Queen Symphony by the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra with Tolga Kashif. Some purists may disagree,
but I'll just turn the sound up they can prattle whilst I enjoy the
    music.

By the way, typing this to Dave Brubeck followed by Bach. I do like my
iTunes even if it has been canned in another thread.
