I adore Tony Benn, and I nearly chose him, but Tam Dalyell's got a
    wider range of interests.

Turn off the A46 at Dunkirk towards Hawkesbury Upton. It's about 1/2 a
    mile a way.

  3. But unfortunately she is not alone.
Since my first exposure to the unwashed masses as a kid in infants
school through to today I have become aware of those whose horizons are
very limited. They may be, for many reasons, just ignorant, ignorant by
choice, ignorant by situation, stupid or just plain thick, but they are
out there and in significant numbers.

I don't know what's actually there, I saw it on the OS map when I was
    looking for Dunkirk.

My personal favourite is Troytown, I can't run past the sign without
looking for a little red and yellow car.

Wouldn't a wooden horse be more likely?

The West Country is a rich source of unusal place names, or unexpected
pronunciations of place names. It's something I shall miss in Oz, though I
might find a suitable replacement with some of the aboriginal place names
    there.

  6. As in "Hollywood screws up *another* historical era"?
I saw the trailer and suspected that it would be one to avoid. Like
    Troy..

  7. Don't be. The flaws in the film are many and various:

The Romans didn't use foreign auxiliaries in Britain at the time
because they had withdrawn the Legions and left for good.
The Roman army didn't do cavalry - they almost exclusively used
auxiliary cavalry. And they didn't use auxiliaries in places where
    there were no regulars available.
The Britains didn't care about the Picts - especially the Britains from
the South. The people they *did* care about were the Saxons - who were
attacking all the way along the east coast - including Scotland. The
majority of Lowland Scots are as Saxon as the English...
The armour, customs and background for the people is taken from
multiple eras and yet it all looks new. The tactics used were laughable
and *nothing* like any of the standard Roman tactics.
The Picts were not at all as portrayed - little is known about them but
they certainly didn't behave as shown.

Arthur (if he existed as a person - some people think he is a composite
of several differnt Romano-British warlords of the post-Roman era)
would have been a Romano-British warlord (Dux Bellorum aka Duke of
War). Most probably he would have been from one of the ancient Celtic
noble families who had adopted Roman habits and ways.
The Romano-British at the time were fighting against the influx of
Saxons (who were themselves being pushed out of their ancestral lands
by other people). They had virtually no contact with the Picts at all -
remember it would take several weeks of travel to get to Scotland!

Gah - don't get me started on how the film industry portrays history -
there is a generation of kids growing up that think the Celts fought
the Mongols just cos they saw it on Xena Warrior Princess..

My (Aussie) other half informs me that the suffix "up" (in Aboriginal place
    names) means water.

Phil Launchbury bored us all completely to death with wittery prose
    along the lines of:
They didn't? Damn. I'm off to rewrite that history book I've just sent
    to the publisher...

  14. I think it /may/ be Bugarup. Tittybong is quite amusing too.

We're moving to Perth, and the missus has already said "no" to the idea of
living in "Innaloo", I can't think why :)
