Dunno if if he's been mentioned here, and I'm too idle to check, but I can
thoroughly recommend the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz. They are
books for children, but well-paced and exciting [enough] for adults. The
premise is that Alex is 14, and has been blackmailed by MI6 into becoming a
teenage spy. Exotic locations, Bond-esque super-villains, adult themes and
enough imaginative violence to keep you interested, but not so overt as too
make you worry about 'psychological damage' to the tiddlers.

Now that JK Rowling has become a demi-god, nobody dares to edit her
increasingly flatulent prose or tell her to tighten up her storylines. I
wouldn't be surprised if the next HP bombs humiliatingly.

My 10yo is galloping through the Rider series right now. So am I!

    No!

My job is shit, I'm skint and I am getting older and fatter. I haven't
been laid in ages and I don't even have the urge to go for a wank any
    more.

But my bike is running and it's a clear night, I'm off down the pub in a
    bit.

I think this is where I say "they all are", and she offers to take them
    off my hands for nowt.

Which is rather at odds with the prices on eBay, though they are
waaay lower than they were a couple of years ago. 72 quid for a
    copy of Pyramids, ffs!
