Howard Philip Lovecraft, the creator of the Cthulu mythos. If you haven't
heard of him you will, undoubtedly, have come across references to his work.
The Necronomicon, for example, is a key feature in many of his stories.

I find it lends a sarcastic tone to a post. That's normally why I use it.

I quite liked "The Silver Sword", "The Machine Gunners", "Moonfleet" and
various RL Stephenson classics as a child. Certainly I can remember
reading and liking them but not what happened.

From secondary school (11+) I moved onto more adult books (Orwell,
Steinbeck, Burgess, Engels and the like).

    You think so?

    <Picks up H P Lovecraft omnibus 3>

I'll re-read it and let you know what I think, eh?

I only know "Moonfleet" out of the above, from the TV adaptation. I
was reading stuff like Asimov, Heinlein, Aldiss etc. in primary
school, along with stuff like Sir.Walter Scott and rubbish like Dennis
    Wheatley.
Well, ditto, bar the Engels. I still haven't grown up enough to stop
    reading SF, though.

It must be ever so sad being you people. I don't understand all this
concept of characterisations, sub plots and story development stuff.
Either a book gives me a good read or it doesn't.

The again all I do is use the language, I don't actually know anything
    about it.

I get the impression that HP is a girlies book.

A lot of people, middle class mums with too much time on their hands
included, will have heard of HP from their preteen daughters. Who in
turn will have got the message from their English teachers that these
    are good books to read.

Tales of daring do and adventure, without bloodshed, without sex,
without a *message*. Those recommending reading to the youngsters could
do worse when searching for suitable content. It is no wonder that HP
comes with the establishment seal of approval and, of course,
translating well to the big screen did the publicity machine no real
    harm either.

No. I am always ambivalent about Lovecraft due to the Mein Kampf
translation but 'At the Mountains of Madness' was one of the first
books to really scare me so holds a special place in my twisted
    psyche.

Haven't reread any for quite some time. I think I'll do a Brian Lumley
session next time I want a horror fix, which is rare now.

Yes. In real life Mr L suffered from a medical condition that made
cold almost unbearable to him IIRC and that came through and resonated
as do some of the sentences in this

    http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/coolair.htm

Shit story telling but lovely use of words. I'll probably skip the re
    reading on balance.

I've got some old early dagons upstairs wonder if it is worth ebaying
    them?

I did it in mid teens and had another burst in mid twenties. I like to
return to things now and again but usually find my memory of them
    should have been left untarnished.
    heh again.

Can I add a recommendation for those that really wish to understand the
    French?

I've not finished it, but it's an excellent book that really describes
the French and their way of life. Everything from polytics through
    educakshun to culture.

It also explains (without saying it in so many words) as to why the
French and English always have that 'rivalry'.

BTW, for the Francophones. Ordinateur is the French for computer, as
IBM thought of the word in '54. The reason being, is that The first two
syllables resemble "Con" and "Pute" are two of the worst insults a
    Frenchman can use. :)

And if you haven't played the game you've missed out on the joy of spending
3 days fleshing out a role-playing character to have them die in about 14
