I hope this isn't too of topic!

I live near Coventry UK and have easy access to the a45 and a46.

I'm going to be commuting to Milton Keynes every day.

online route planners suggest my best route is a46,a45,m45,m1 and claim it
will take 45 minutes. I doubt this in rush hour!

Is there anybody out there who would use a different route in rush hour?

    Thanks in anticipation :)

That doesn't sound unreasonable on a bike... Slow, if anything.
I did MK to Derby in an hour the other day.

Filtering will make mincemeat of rush hour traffic.

  3. I commuted from Leicester to MK for 5 years and used the M1 - Usually its
faster, but I learned many of the back roads around Northampton during those
inevitable motorway traffic jams. You should certainly consider the A5 for
some light relief from time to time.

I now live in MK :)

    Good luck!

A colleague of mine was living in Rugby and commuting to MK and he used to
manage it in 45 minutes each day.

The trick is to know that once you get on the M45 you can go as fast as you
like; as Jeremy Clarkson put it, "The biggest risk of speeding on the M45 is
that you might hit a sheep that's grazing in the fast lane".

    Broons Bane expressed the following:
As someone has already mentioned the M45 is where you do top speed runs
whatever the time of day. I've done Kenilworth to Upminster in Essex
    (A46, A45, M45, M1 and round to junct 29 of the M25) on a weekday
morning in about 90 minutes. The only time I haven't got past MK in 40
minutes was because the M1 was shut at Junct 15 due to an accident and
the resulting traffic laden diversion took me past the outskirts of MK
    in about 50-60 minutes.....and I'm a complete wuss.

In my experience the traffic on the M1 only gets really bad once you get
    past MK.

  8. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Broons Bane"
What's the point of posting in ukrm, then? Any bike-related replies will
    not be relevant to you.

Otoh,,, you could get a bike on the road and reap the benefits.

Because this was one of only two newsgroups in the uk that I could find that
seemed to remotely be able to help with my questions.

It's very tempting, but I'm too safety conscious. I've never met a biker who
    hasn't come off it.

....and you're unlikely to meet any in UKRM.

Having said that, I haven't fallen off my bike in over 14 years[1]
