Well as I've been taking more of an interest in people-powered 2 wheelers
recently[1] I thought I'd have a look in on UKRC.

That was a mistake, wasn't it? What a load of toss. I've only been
skimming through the group for a couple of days and I'm already sick to the
back teeth of trying to work out who's trolling who and based on what. Dear
god, there's more chance of finding out something about motorcycles from
this group than there is of finding anything useful in that place, and
    that's scary.

    [1] Can't afford petrol, see.

Yes, that's why there is going to be a moderated group. It satrted going
downhill 3 years ago when regular 'rider down' posts appeared. It got
worse, with every near miss argued about for days, then the trolls
arrived who think helmets should be compulsory.
If you want an off-road forum, the one at www.singletrackworld.com is
alright. There is another road orientated one, but cannot recall the
    details now.

From a cursory glance it's hard to see how a moderated group is going help -
there seem to be two sides who both make reasonable[1] posts with completely
    different points of view.
See what I mean? That's a valid point of view. It's not one I subscribe
to, but I can understand why people would think it. It's not like the
trolls are posting saying "all cyclists are wankers"[2]
I'll have a look around and see what there is - don't fancy that off-road
    stuff.

[1] For Usenet values of 'reasonable'
[2] Even though all cyclists *are* wankers

Yep. Helmets and cars are the two major issues, with two camps - pain in the
arse cyclists with their all too common attitude that they're doing the
world a favour by riding a bike, and the whole world is against them for it,
and people who turn up and go "Make helmets compulsory" or "I like driving
quickly" and wind up the first lot. As others have said, it used to be a
*reasonable* group before. I've found the attitude on cycling forums to be
odd fairly often - as if cycling sets you apart from the rest of humanity.
The good thing about this place is that people just call you a ****. On UKRC
they spend hours writing great theses on why you're a ****.

Nobody is a troll on there. They're all cycling around with massive
chips on their shoulders and even I as a cyclist hate the group.

    It should be called uk.rec.victim.mentality.

    It used to be okay.

Perhaps all the cyclists on ukrm should stage a coordinated mass takeover?

Well quite. Stating your opinion, which others may disagree with isn't
    Trolling AFAIK.
Making up stuff which you don't really believe or know about and posting
it just to cause annoyance or friction, is Trolling?

Wonder what pseudonym I should use for UKRC..... It seems to me that
all bicycles being used on public roads should carry ANPR readable
number plates, riders should have 3rd party liability insurance and CE
    approved helmets should be compulsory.

Do we have to cycle there or can we go in the car?

Well, it's the information superhighway, isn't it? That implies
cycles should be on a cycletrack next to it.

....and cyclists should have to pass a test before being allowed on public
roads and bicycles should have to pass an MOT test. Bicyles should be taxed
and required to display a tax disc.

don't forget an annual mot on all bicycles three years old or more, working
lights and horn and minimum tyre tread depth, operating licence with theory
    and practical components...

ANPR readable number plates... not unreasonable. How? Where would
you put them that didn't pose a danger for the rider and potentially
anyone else involved in an accident with a bike? Think back to front
    plates on motorcycles.

3rd party insurance... yeah, agree with that one. I actually have
    it.

CE approved helmet... no, don't agree. Cycle helmets have yet to be
proven to have a measurable benefit, so until they are, I quite like
    the personal choice.

Cycling test... again, not unreasonable. At least demonstrable
knowledge of the Highway Code, but at what age? You can ride a bike
at any age. And if you don't pass the test, you'll have people riding
    illegally on pavements endangering pedestrians.

Bicycle MOT... again, not unreasonable that someone's equipment is
    properly maintained.

Tax... why? Road fund licence, AIUI is calculated based on emissions
now and previously vehicle weights to indicate damage to the road
surface. A cycle has no emissions and does causes no wear.
