You need to get someone to direct it for you.

It seemed fairly obvious to me that the OP wants a plate that is
smaller than the minimum legal size.

For what it's worth, I've used such plates for more than 20 years, and
never been fined or convicted for them.

Oh yes, I realised that. I was merely saying that there might not be enough
room on it for the letters and numbers *if* he wanted to stay legal.
I suppose the Glos police aren't too bothered; the Gwent types evidently
are. I wish they'd make up their minds. I'm surprised they're not
campaigning for the return of the front number plate. It must really piss
them off that they can't identify a bike from the front.

I hardly restrict my motorcycling to Gloucestershire.

    I've even ridden in Gwent.

Front plates identify a bike from the side, not the front.

Some twerps from Glos pulled me over on the A40, I suspect more out of
curiousity than anything else. After giving the LE a good eyeballing
they had a moan about the silver on black number plates until I assured
them that they are perfectly legal on a 1960s machine. They then tried
to convince themselves that the pedestrian castrator AKA front plates
were probably in some way illegal despite being original equipment on
every britbike until at least the 1970s.

    Kids of today muttermuttermutter.

Only the slicer style. Many bikes, especially the trailie style, had their
plates across the bars above the headlight, and others had stick-on letters
    across the screen.

Read my post again. I don't think I ever said anything about a "minimum
legal size" for a plate. I only discussed the size and spacing of the
letters and numbers, and any reference in my posts to illegality referred
solely to that aspect. I don't know what the minimum legal size of a plate
might be and the document I referred to didn't mention it AFAICR.

It may be that if you have a registration mark with fewer or thinner
letters/numbers, you could fit a smaller than "standard" plate and still
comply will all the rules about the sizes of the letters/numbers, the
spacing between them and the margin around them - I don't know and I didn't
discuss physical plate size for that reason.

Regardless of the physical size of plate the OP wishes to use, there's also
a regulation covering the size and spacing of the lettering and I was merely
pointing that out to him and, indirectly, that this sort of information is
available on official government sites which are probably more accurate and
up-to-date than a Usenet newsgroup. How he chooses to use the information
is (a) up to him and (b) of little interest to me other than the fact that
I'd hate to hear that he got pulled over for shaving a few millimetres off a
plate by some traffic cop who had nothing better to do.

in a decade or so the literate will probably be in a minority, so the
    issue will be immaterial.

OP: I want an illegally small plate
you: careful, read this, a small plate might not be legal

OP didn't say that. He didn't give any indication that he was aware there
was a restriction. I'll concede that I may be stupid, but not for the
    reason you've given.
