If one were thinking of spending a couple of weeks camping in the UK, &
wanted to keep in touch with the interweb from their (wifi-less)
campsite, & only had 500mb/month bundled with their phone, what's the
    cheapest option?

Probably to buy a 30 day mobile internet bundle that has a few gig in
it for the phone and then cancel it when you get back.

    don't.

Best plan is to find a cafe/pub with free wi-fi. Most do these days.

Or buy a PAYG SIM - you can get data browsing from 30p a day:

Anyone got any recommendations for getting cheap data charges when
abroad (Europe / Spain specifically)? I don't mind switching SIM cards
for the purposes of data access.

Or indeed using a dongle direct in a laptop.

Who supplies the dongle / what's the best (or target) data charge rate?

    Depends how much you want.

Vodafone have just announced a rejig of their roaming prices. Previously
they were £5/25MB, which was quite reasonable. Then it became £5/5MB,
which was a pisstake. Now they're charging £2 for the first 25MB and £5
for every 5MB thereafter. I think.

I've just tried to find the relevant info on their web site but they
appear to have recently redesigned it, removed half the useful
information and optimised it for the partially-sighted. And I can't
really recommend them because I wouldn't put it past them to quintruple
the roaming rates again at the drop of a hat.

giffgaff.com seems to get some good write ups at £10 for a month of
    "unlimited" web.

I'd recommend something like a huawei e585 (sold as 3 MiFi for
example). £50, and E15 to unlock. Saved me a fortune in Oz and works
with things without usb ports, like phones. Just stick a foreign data
sim in it and turn it on whenever you want some local wifi.

3 payg sim card at £15 for unlimited data for a month seems like quite a
    good deal.

For France, yes. Might be the same in Spain but I dunno. I've got the
details on t'other PC, but the gist is you buy an Orange PAYG SIM in
France, fire it up, go into a menu thingy, punch in a bunch of stuff &
get free data. There's meant to be a limit, & tethering's not allowed,
but in reality they don't check anything.

I was using the £5 / 25 meg on a prepay for most of the last six months
and it worked out very well as it was just a back up for when wifi was
unavailable or stupid expensive (Marriott Hotels - sort yourselves out).
Compares rather well with the £3.70 per meg that Orange wanted.
Which is exactly what they did to my voice roaming about ten years.

Really? Weird. I just bought a phone from them a month or so ago and got
    a SIM for £15.

    <looks>
