  1. I think the sons and grandson of the people who came up with some of
    the stuff in here:
    www.luft46.com
are alive and well and working in Bavaria.

Looks a bit like Sir Patrick Moore - Who was my FiLs navigator

Except that it is already in the K1200S.

    So it's not "new".

    It's new-ish.

'Inline' in the context of engine design doesn't refer to the
orientation of the crank in the frame. It refers strictly to
the layout of the cylinder bores. E.g., a vee-four or a boxer
four (or a radial...) are not inline fours, no matter what the
orientation of their crankshafts WRT the bike's frame.

The old K75/K100 (AKA brick) style engine had its cylinder bores
parallel to the ground, and crank axis situated longitudinally,
and the new K1200/S supersports have the cylinder bores inclined
about 30 degrees(?) from horizontal, with the crank axis situated
across the frame, but both are certainly inline fours.

It's a bit of a mouthful, but the K1200 could be said to have a
'transversely mounted inline 4', I suppose.
