Tyres near London on a Sunday?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by anonymouslemming, Jul 26, 2008.

  1. Me... Again.... arse :(

Sorry to post yet another query, but I knew that the new toy was too
good to be true, so it went and got a large nail in the back tyre just
to show me that it doesn't love being owned by a wanker who can't ride
    it properly.

Anyone know where I can get a tyre repaired / replaced on a Sunday
in / near London? Google is not being really helpful and the bloke who
does motorbikes at Evean, my local tire mob, isn't in until Monday.

The AA are on their way, but they will only put a temporary bung in,
and I'm stuck working from 7am this week, so I'd really like to get
this sorted before I have to *shudder* consider the tube as a means of
    transport.

    Thanks in advance,

You could try Essential Rubber in De Beauvoir[1] or Protyre in Enfield. NB
I'm not sure about Sunday opening, you'll have to call.

  3. Thanks for the pointers.

Protyre are definitely closed on a Sunday - they were one of the first
places I tried based on the thread about mobile tyre fitters here the
other day. Discount Motorcycle Tyres are also Monday - Saturday, and I
think I offended the bloke by asking if they were open on Sunday
because he explained that they work 6 days a week from 9 until 6 and
didn't sound chuffed with the question.

I've left a message for Essential Rubber, but I'm not optimistic.
Looks like I'll need to wrangle some time off this week to get this
    sorted.

Another chain with several branches in the SE (not all do bike tyres)

Get a mobile in on Tuesday. The bung will be fine until then IWHT. If
you're that worried, fill it with gloop and just don't replace the tyre.

  6. I called a load of places but none of them did bike mobile fitting
    around Angel / Islington.

The AA have stuch a temporary bung in, so I'll just have to skive off
for a bit on Monday and get it sorted somewhere. Looks like Universal
in Greenwich do bike tyres so I might try there - that's not too far
from home if the tunnel is working.

Now for the decision about permanent bung or new tyre - the Honda
manual says no to bungs or at least never do more than 80mph with one,
but I'm sure I know people who've had patches in for months and months
with no issues, by which time it will be time to replace the tyre
anyway. I'll just have to see what the tyre place says about the
    chances of a permanent fix.

Thanks for the help though all!

  8. When I was calling around, I was asking about Monday as well, and none
of the places I called did mobile tyres on bikes. The guy at discount
motorcycle tyres said he didn't know of anyone who offered that for
bikes at all. But it looks like Chasbikes might be my answer anyway,
and save me Monday grief :)

  9. From their website, they look ideal - less than 10 miles from me and
open tomorrow - thanks a lot, I'll give them a ring.

  11. Thanks a lot for this link - they did the job in the end.

I wasn't madly thrilled about the 2 trips back because the chain was
rattling against the centrestand, but all is well that ended well and
they were open when I needed them.

So new tyre or permanent repair?

If the latter, I wouldn't worry too much about the '80mph max' that
they recommend - I didn't and I'm not dead yet.

  13. Permanent repair seeing as the guys said that would be fine. Although,
this morning it was on 36psi so I need to check it again before I
leave work and make sure it's not leaking still.

The 80mph limit doesn't worry me as much as carrying a pillion, but I
can't afford to replace both tyres every time I get a puncture, so I'm
just going to have to test it and take things slow for now.

Yeah, it's worth keeping any eye on it for the next day or two, IMO.
I had a puncture repaired in a tyre that had 1000 miles in it. I'm now
up to 5300 miles and it's been fine, even when hooning. Of course, I
now actually need a new tyre but that's by the by.
