Thanks to Theo bakkers for the post on tyres.

After reading his post, checking out the site and pricing the tyres in
different locations in Australia I ordered a pair of Dunlop K70s for my old
    Triumph.
    1) They had them in stock
    2) They stated that they would be here in approx 8 days.
    3) They arrived at my door after 6 days.
    4) They were between $30 and $110 dollars cheaper depending on where I
sourced them in Aus. The $110 saving is if I had bought them from my closest
    supplier in town.

It is a shame I can get them cheaper in the U.S. but I suppose the local
distributors may order 400 tyres or so a year where as in the U.S. they
would order 400 tonnes of them! so the bulk price would reflect the retail,
plus of course the exchange rates at the moment.
So thanks again Theo, all I have to do now is fit them!

mate has scored a few sets from USA for his bikes while $ is worth something...

For my 4wd its $800 cheaper for a set from USA inc shipping than buying locally.

I've got a pair of Blundstone firey boots. Cost me $275.

There's "around the block" boots and then there are real boots. E.g.
I've got a pair of Doc Martin patent leather dress shoes.

    I don't get it.
I was told If you want to import a motorcycle from America you will need to
remove the tyres and leave them behind.
Something about protecting the tyre industry here.

I wear out two pairs of Redbacks per year.
They are a little cheaper than Blundstone though claim to be Australian
    made as well.
I also find them more comfortable as the sole is softer to walk on.

Blundstone offshored manufacturer of their boots a few years ago and no
longer make any such claims. They only boots they manufacture in
    Australia these days are gumboots.

For those who have asked about the costs etc. with importing tyres through
    Tire Rack:

    285/70R17 BFG TA KM2 - US$260... that is AUD$247 today*.

The best over the phone quote I got was AUD$490... hands up who thinks that's
    a reasonable mark-up? but that's not why I'm doing it, I simply want KM2s
and there is no other way for me to get them.

So... total cost for 8 imported 33" KM2s including freight, wire transfer
    fee and fitting is AUD$3130

That compares to a local cost of $3920 - a saving of $790, or near enough
    to $100 per tyre.
