Tyre Replacement

I know it's a very subjective subject but I wouldn't mind some views.......

I had a rear blowout on the Blackbird today. Luckily in town traffic at
about 20 mph. It looks like some sort of industrial staple has caused it.
The current tyres are Michelin Macadam and would not have been my choice but
was the choice of the previous owner. I have found them to be ok but no more
than that (and worse than 020's, Z6, AV 45/46, Road Attacks etc).

I can get a repair for £15 BUT it is not recommended and I must admit I am
cautious given that it is a 170 mph bike. So what to buy? The local tyre
fitter has suggested Pirelli Strada's. Has anyone used these on a Blackbird
or another bike with similar performance?

The suggested Blackbird replacement in most of the forums seems to be the
Avons but I found them (on a 1200 Bandit) to be a bit skittish in damp
conditions (fine in soaking wet or dry though). The old replacements would
have been 020's but I have found I lose about 1000 miles per tyre now they
have replaced the compound in the NT derivation. I found the Continentals
(again on the B12) to give a good compromise between mileage and performance
but nobody seems to rave about them and I have heard a few shredding stories
with bigger horsepower. The Z6's were good and I would use them again but I
must admit to "wanting" to try the Pirelli.

I suppose whatever I get will be better than the Macadams but that doesn't
mean I want to go for the first things that I see.

Anyway I'm off to take the wheels off (want to replace as a pair) so reply
    away!

    Cheers,

    Mark

You won't be disappointed with BT014's though they are not designed to
    last forever

Bridgestone on the Triple. 010 ATM IIRC. They are much better than I am.

Macadams are awful. Loads of mileage, no wettigrippers, innit. I'm a
convert to the Avon 45/46 camp myself - they certainly suited my
140bhp RF900 very well and despite a fairly enthusiastic riding style
gave superb wear characteristics. Definitely preferred to the 020
both in wet grip and mileage.

I like those. The dogs bollox they are, especially when they have got
    enough air in them.

  13. No you didn't
Or you wouldn't be writing this. A puncture is what you had.
Bridgestone BT45s? The dual compound things - soft rubber on the edges,
    hard in the centre.

I've had them on my Trophy 1200 for a couple of years - not as fast or
as powerful as a 'Bird, but still a lot of bike. They do the job.

Macadams are utter shite, agreed. Hard as rock and with no feel
    whatsoever.

I had a blowout[1] on me ole CB175 once, at about 50mph. The blerk in
the car behind was most impressed that I managed to stay on the bike. I
    was more surprised.

[1] Valve came away from the tube.

  15. I am not the ginger one, but I'm on my second front and third rear of
these on my B12 - the only downside I can come up with, is that
occasionally (and I mean maybe 4 times in 3 tyres) the rear will spin up
in the wet. That may well be due to me being a hamfisted ****. The good
thing, is that if you do it whilst upright, they don't fishtail, just
rise through the revs and make you look to see if your chain is in the road.

They get my approval, and whilst I'm not ever likely to keep up with Mr.
Bonwick et al, I don't like to think of myself as slouchy.
