Yup, if you're paying for it then it must be right. No idea what the
    tolerances are on that though.

Given how frequently the fucking things seem to be out of order, I would
hope the answer would be "often".

I find the local Shell one very convenient for the car. You punch in
the pressure you want and then it beeps when the pressure is reached.

Although why 20p is never enough for 4 tyres I don't know.

Ask your local Trading Standards Officer.

They check tyre pressure gauges when they check the pumps are
    dispensing accurately.

steve robinson emerged from their own little world to say

You are wrong. They all produce a catalogue which has the recommended tyre
    (s) and pressures for each model. Most of them are available online. E.g.
    http://www.dunloptyres.co.uk/bike/ click on fitment/pressure

    Google for the others.

Especially the freebie lines. POP - TSO uses calibrated gauge on one
of their car tyres, checks with airline. Rechecks with calibrated
gauge. Sorted. They have an allowance of plus/minus 10% or 3psi from
    memory.

Do you drive a JCB full time, or just evenings?

I had my last tyre changed at Roadwheel in Fleet, Hants, and the guy there
said that they have to have the gauges checked / calibrated every six months
    by law.

So he inflated my new tyre to 42 psi and I checked with my gauge (stick
type) which read 46 psi, so now I use that to check, bearing in mind the 4
    psi over read it gives.....
