I'm well aware that no tyre of the class we discuss is going to go
    boom anywhere near 42 psi.
And I say again - I do not in any way say that 42 psi inflation is
wrong for a tyre that has 42 on the sidewall.

    But the following sentence from
    http://www.metzelermoto.com/product_info/marking/index.htm
"The maximum load in lbs is written on every METZELER street
tire together with the corresponding maximum cold inflation
pressure in psi." is, to me, quite clear. They do not say only that
the stated pressure corresponds to the maximum load but add
    in the word maximum.

I'm convinced that it's perfectly safe to inflate quite a bit more,
probably many times more while mounting a new tyre, but that
does not change the meaning of the sidewall marking.
Indeed, it would be strange if the tyre manufacturer did not
cover his ass by putting a limit on inflation pressures, the US
custom of suing companies for user stupidity is spreading.

In exactly the same way as cranes are tested to one and a half their
    rated safe limit.
