Haven't seen the TT yet, but they stuck reasonably well to the spirit
    of the first one.

To the spirit, yes, but there were some significant alterations.
At the begining, for example, in the book there's quite a wait for
Gandalf and the expectation of his return - none of that was in the film
and it makes quite a difference.

Yes I know, it annoyed the hell out of me too. Dunno why they did it,
as it left them one or two loose threads in the plot. I was more
annoyed by the blatant misportrayal of Boromir as a scheming bad guy.

I must say that that is the only major disappointment I found with it. Oh,
and the complete lack of Tom Bombadil, of course.

I read the books when I was 10 (ish) and have never bothered to re-read them
(Star Wars came along and not only blew the LOTR universe out of the way,
but also highlighted how fecking long winded LOTR was). The films have made
LOTR far more accessable, which for me, is a good thing, (being the dimwit I
    am).

Oh, thanks; now I /know/ how it ends...

No point in waiting for instalment 3 of the fillum, now, eh?

    Tch!

  8. Don't say that - you'll upset Bear.

I'm taking lessons off JP - although he'd
probably have got all the shopping for free.

A friendly character at the start, that was not a wizard or a hobbit. I
don't think he added anything to the plot, which can be said about a lot of
the characters in LOTR, albeit some of the non-plot characters do come in
    elsewhere in JRRTs universe.

Tom Bombadil could have been cameo'd by Tom Goode (Richard Briers). That
    would've been funny...

In the film Grima says the equivalent of "The only weakness is a drain
tunnel in the wall. Put the bomb in there. Sorted."

Well that's just bloody stupid. The orcs getting into the culvert is
only a minor part of the battle os Helm's Deep.

But LOTR is about so much more than just a plot.

I think those who complain about the lenght of it (not that you did
here) miss the point somewhat. It is not a short story or a quick read
but an epic, and a bloody good one too.
Heh, yes, I can see that.

Perhaps Felicity Kendal could have been his wife.

'twas fairly significant - completely unexpectedly destroying the outer

but it only takes up one page (out of 1069 in one edition I've got
open in front of me, 433 of which is the TT), so it's a fairly
    short-lived point.

The Ainur? 'The great among thes spirits the Elves named the Valar,
the Powers of Arda, and men have often called them gods'. Yeah, OK,
    I'll give you that.
None of the descriptions of the Valar, or their servants the Maiar,
sound to me anything like Tom Bombadil. In any event, they surely
would have been more concerned with events in the world than was TB -
they certainly seem like they'd have more power.

Just watching her now in a new series called 'Rosemary and Thyme'.
She's still quite horny, even into her <thinks> late fifties?

I remember seeing her a few years ago in some WWII based drama and
    thinking the same.

    The little minx.

Shame the series will probably result in her not being seen on TV for
another 9 years... It's like Midsomer Murders meets Gardeners World...
