TWO Mag - Confused

  1. Yeah, fair enough.
I can't understand why they don't fit belt drives to more bikes.
Kawasaki tried with the 250, the horrible 305 and a couple of custom
abortions. Harley and BMW do it. Belts are great. Why not a belt-driven
    500, 600 or whatever.

Would the general biking public *buy* one though?

AFAIK these belts are used to transmit well more than 80bhp in their
more usual applications - the restricting factor for motorbike use
seems to be the width, because normally if you want to transmit more
power you'll simply increase the belt width. Hard to do on a bike.

Plus of course there are the belt breakages that you get from pricking
up small stones and the like...

Put one either side of the wheel for dual belt drive and use the
    circumference mounted brake discs.

They still have to clear the tyre, and no sports bike these days has
something that's not at least 180 wide. You'll end up with a rather
    wide rear end.

Actually someone in Germany engineered a belt drive conversion for the
Sprint ST and was about to put it into limited production but couldn't
get the belt breakage problems sorted. The single-sided swing arm
Triumphs and Hondas are probably better suited to this kind of
conversion because the rear sprocket sits outside the the swingarm and
    not inside.

Aha, hence the recent editions having crap freebies attached?

I thought PB used to put circulation figures in the inside cover and
they used to be around the 70k mark. Have they gone downhill since the
latest style change? I know I stopped buying it.

Well, I don't /know/ the man, but I have heard him referred to as "Rupe
Paul" which is merely a contraction of his christian name.
