    That's a shame. I quite liked that.

Well I suppose it's all subjective but I'd but interested in your opinion
given that you're a journo and all that, so why was it shite?

  4. It didn't have the slightest idea who the hell it was aimed at. It was
completely lacking in any type of focus. It had a huge wealth of talent
working on it, but it didn't have a strong enough editor to give the
whole thing a distinctive, unique feel that appealed to a specific
    readership

None of the mainstream mags have what could be called a regular sales
rate (if one sells well then the others, relatively speaking, don't),
but TWO was so transient in its appeal that it barely sold anything at
all, although I do know it finally broke the 20,000 mark recently, but
    it was obviously too late

Oh, and I'm a photojournalist (and film maker, 'natch), which isn't the
    same thing at all

They probably paid for the advertising/sponsorship some time ago.

Interesting. I agree with your 'target market' point. I always felt they
were trying to be a motorcycle version of FHM if you consider Performance
Bikes and Fast Bikes to be of the 'Loaded' genre.

The ever changing editor scenario didn't help the mag gain a 'feel' /
'style' that was consistant. It was almost as though a member of the team
got a chance to be editor every few months although each style seemed as
    bland as the next.
    Shall we make some porn?

  8. Absolutely, in spades, well said that man.

When Haymarket bought it, there were mutterings that they were going toi
put a lot of money into it, and that it would then give EMAP a hard
time, but I couldn't see it myself: they had the same editorial team,
the same snappers - just throwing money at a magazine doesn't make it
    work.

You *have* to have a really committed, opinionated editor. Within reason
it doesn't matter whether their opinions are wrong or right, but an
editor with the force of character to push a title where he wants it to
go is generally a good one.

An editor with said force of character, and the ability to listen to his
dep and others when they occasionally demur is even better.
I think Bike still sells strongly, consistently. It's been Bike's
fortune that it's had a series of damn good editors, and the present
incumbent occasionally comes up with the gloriously off-beat stuff. IMHO
it's approaching the eclecticism of CAR magazine in the early-to-mid
    1980s, but then I admit I'm biased.

If you want an example of how a really, *really* talented editor can
make a magazine work, look at MCN Sport. The monthly. Yes, I know it has
an MCN logo on it, but buy a copy anyway. It's edited by Rupert Paul and
    it is utterly brilliant.

I'll also be interested to see what happens to Classic Bike now that
Hugo Wilson is in the chair - another bod I have a lot of time for, and
I can say that freely because I have no connection with said title!
    Indeed.

  12. Bike sells over 100,000, Superbike over 70,000, to give you some idea of
    how far behind TWO was.

    What about PB, then?

Personally, I could seldom tell the difference between PB and SB.

One has tits in the center and the other has tits as the editorial staff.

    Both much of a muchness:

"We took eighty-six highly-strung, top-drawer sprotsbikes to the Cote
D'Azur where we wheelied the **** out 'em, do'nutted them to buggery,
stoppied every-fucking-where and then crashed them. They were all quite
good but some were slightly better than others. The ZXGSXCBR2000 is the
dogs danglies 'cause it was two-thousandths of a second quicker round the
track than the CBRZXGSXR2000 was last year when we did exactly the same
    fucking thing."

IMO they're all a bag of shite. Just the same shit articles repeated
every other month wrapped in different title. At the end of the day
there's only so much that can be said about bikes during the course of
a year. Anyone for yet another tedious 1000cc shootout or tyre test?

The racing mags are quite a bit better though but that maybe simply
because I'm more interested in that side of things.
