My sons, age 19 and 15 were just discussing the length of something and
one asked me "How many inches are there in a metre?"

    (25.4 mm/in) / (7.62 mm) = 3.33333333/in

You might want to try that the other way up.

Actually, The Older Gasbag is hoping that some desperate talent scout
will discover him on Usenet and hire him to do a standup comedy
    routine...

Well of course my hidden question related to MV's!

Out of interest. I have a set of 996 forks revalved by K-Tech with
radial bottoms/calipers fitted. Thing is the top/bottom yoke diameters
are different to my ST4S. Top yoke 3mm smaller, bottom 1mm bigger. I'm
rather bemused at how to go about mating the bike to the forks, short of
a complete custom yoke set which i assume would be tres expensive.
    Ideas?

Ah. That would be the same dylsexic universe where
one performs a 360° turn and ends up travelling in
    the opposite direction.

Right, the kettle's on. It has boiled already but I was busy reading
old favourites in the faqs, and got distracted and ended up at
    http://www.jasperfforde.com/phorum/read.php?1,4809 reading the
liffings. I'll light the gas again.

    I can't believe what I'm reading.

Is this something to do with your 180 degree circles, or a new
    mathematical insight?

  12. I need a cuppa. This thread went OT from one on reeky, where some nutter
decided that he'd quote a dictionary definition to make his point, and
was silly enough simply to make it up himself and get caught at it.

Wonderfully sad, but left me with a dry throat.

    Better now, thanks.

At 49 years old, anything, really. I worked with both metric and
imperial measures in school but then worked solely in metric when I went
to Tech College to do engineering in 1975 when the metric system really
    started to kick off.

I work in Bar with tyres, litres with fuel and oil, kW for engine power,
and am quite happy working with miles or km for distance and mpg or
litres per 100 km for fuel consumption. Height \ weight I now work in
metric - that was the last "bastion" of the old system for me.

The real benefit is being able to compare like for like.

A bike engine is rated in kw like an electric motor, like a
refrigeration system, like a power generation plant so it is easy to
work out energy in \ out figures and make comparisons.

Fuel energy is in joules, power is joules over a period of time and so
on. A seamless system that saves a lot of messing about, and potential
    mistakes, when working stuff out.

Bar is a kg\cm pressure that converts easily into force of Newtons per
sq mm so you can easily work out fluid pressures and involves little
more than moving the decimal point in the correct direction.

I get the impression that, over time, the imperial system will die, as
more young people use it. The EU won't have to legislate.

Even the Americans will have to come round eventually like the rest of
the industry does.... and maybe stop planes falling out the sky when the
pilot does the sums wrong when he orders his fuel in litres but works
out the comsumption in gallons (or even US gallons ffs)....

Like working in foreign languages, if insist you have to convert, you
are making life difficult, just use the system "as is"

Errrm - Airliners load fuel in tonnes (metric ton = 1000kg) which are
almost the same size as imperial tons.
