Well, IME lids were never used in my part of the UK (experience dating
from about '77 onwards to some point in the mid-late '80s)

I've been worrying about the shooting at the 2012 olympics. Where are
we going to get enough Brazillian electricians for our team to
    practice with?

And its own size in Norway.

tomme – thumb (inch), 1/12 fot, approx. 26.1 mm c/f the imperial inch
    of 25.4 mm

I'd be ashamed to count myself among the "perfectly normal". Whenever I
meet someone like that, he always manages (an achievement in its own
right) to be both stultifyingly boring _and_ a borderline psychopath.

It's amazing that this bullshit thread spun off from somebody
misunderstanding that a certain diesel-powered car's mileage was
quoted in miles per imperial gallon, not miles per US gallon...

Heh, Almost. VAX-VMS (a largely defunct mainframe OS [1]) used
    Microfortnights as an internal counter.

It would be considered unremarkable in the shedde. This is one of the
perils of cross-posting, a sort of culture shock. But that is not
always a bad thing, as I was saying to Professor Challenger.....

I was taught both at school, so neither faze me. (I also narrowly
missed slide rules, but did have to use log tables)

I can convert from euros-£, kilometers to miles, gallons to litres,
    lbs-Kg mentally [1]

But I always think in MPG terms, rather than Km/Litre, similarly for
    HP/BHP rather than PS

[1] Which is some feat, considering my appalling mental arithmetic)
