More efficient, but ultimately a bit shit as the contribution is so
    non-linear.
    Powerbands are so '80s.

It's 170bhp and the chassis can handle a lot more. It's the same car
as the new GTi and that makes 200.

I'm seriously tempted to buy one of the GT's as the fuel consumption
    is bloody good as well.

Auctions finished last night, need to strip a load more off and get out
the polish before I put any more on.

Entire zx7r, bit by bit, plenty cheapness. Want some rearsets?

That'll be because Rover had to restrict the thing so it wouldn't put out
more than 85 ft/lb through the gearbox, that being the weak link on the A
series unit. A friend had a deristricted turbo engine in a mini, 110bhp at
the wheels isn't too shabby. Even then the 'turbo' clutch assembly was
ditched in favour of the old style mini clutch - which is stronger.

    says...
I built a 1380 Mini engine with the help of MED in Leicester, it had
124bhp at the wheels but ran through a Jack Knight straight cut dog-box.
I had to fit helical drop gears because the noise from the straight cut
drops I originally fitted were driving me and my neighbours mad.

No need for a turbo, just a single HIF44 carb that had been properly set
up on a Vizard style manifold, plenty of quality engineering, major head
work and clever matching of internals coupled to a Mini-Spares RC50
    exhaust and big bore LCB.

My ex-wife hated it, which I thought was a bit unfair considering I'd
built it for her to go shopping in. It was a bit lively on 165x10" Yoko
    008Rs and a 3.44:1 diff.

I think Sweller has evidence to the contrary.

A turbo NEVER stops working, they just aren't efficient enough to provide
any power increase until they reach a certin rpm. Big turbo's do it at lower
revs, smaller turbo's need higher revs and variable vane turbo's have a
wider spread but aren't as good at producing masses of grunt as either of
    the other two.

Sounds very nice. My own personal weapon was a blaze red (orange) '79
1275GT with an MED 1380 hillclimb engine. Same power but S/C drops and a
helical box. Webber 45 etc. Loved it and want it back as I've heard it
maybe coming on the market again, the only vehicle I *liked* that I never
lost money on lol. Took it on a trackday to Cadwell many moons ago.

Sweller's turbo has something that actually stops it turning?

  14. I bet it worried a lot of people on supposedly faster machinery, too.

A pal of mine had a Maestro turbo which would top 150mph on the clock.
Probably a bit optomistic, but the fucking thing was a flyer.

    And you'd be right.

The downside being that you then run off the top end of
Yeah, they run out of puff before they should. Probably why there are a lot
of hybrids out there now and why Ford changed the turbo on the Escort Cozzie
to a larger, but slower and laggier (if there's such a word) than the
    original version.

Isn't this the point of twin turbo set ups - a small
    Generally speaking, yep.

    Didn't they have a 2l O-series engine with 150bhp? 150mph was very optimistic.
Through the nearest hedge was more realistic when you put your foot down.

I believe they did and it was probably one of those.

    150mph was very optimistic.
Hence the "had" in my OP:)

From what I remember there were only 2 other road legal mini's that passed
me on the track. One of them was late on the sunday when I was loaded up to
go home too! It ate the marshall's 2.5 V6 cavalier for breccy.

It was a great 'Mini only' track weekend but the torrential rain on the sat
afternoon, which resulted in the start/finish straight flooding, and the
general shite weather meant not alot of public turned up to take advantage.
The event has never again taken place (
