Chatting with friends last night in the pub and having watched the 600cc
race earlier in the week we were discussing how quick we could be
    relative to those guys.

I being an old git with a Sprint ST and no way a knee down person
reconed it would take me al least three times as long to get round
as them, probably even longer, whereupon another chap thought
he might be able to do it in only twice the time.

What do those here think, and for those of you who have been
there (i have not) how did you get on?

    Thanks
    Alan

I'm a reasonably competent road rider and the maximum speed I saw on
the mountain road last weekend was 130mph.

They _average_ 130mph over the course.

A few years ago, myself and Monz (on Daytona 955i and Gixxer thou
respectively) managed a slightly sub-1-hour lap on open roads, sticking
to the rules of the road.

This question hinges on whether a) you're on a closed course and b) if
not, how sensible are you being? If you're on open roads it's massively
subjective to the amount of traffic and the nob-factor you're willing
    to run to.

18 mins 51 this year (sob).

In '97, on the Nordwest[1], I managed to do 5Kms up the start of the
mountain in 2 minutes and 38 seconds. So not even averaging 70mph. Top
speed of 101 mph through the speed trap part way up the mountain mile.

Even assuming I could keep up that pace for a whole lap, not even good
enough to beat Jimmy Simpson in 1926.

Indeed. The late Gavin Lee lapped at 92.4 in the 1994 singles TT on a
substantially standard (certainly less than 50BHP) Gilera Nuovo Saturno
    500.

TBF, the bit I did included the steepest bit. FTD on a bike in the 97
hill climb was 2 minutes 17 on a road legal GSXR 1000.

My missing footnote was going to say how Champ was only 6% quicker than
my Nordwest personal best, when he rode it at Prescott last year. Then I
realised what only 6% slower than his best 600 Manx lap would be!

Indeed. A few years back I did a 26:30 lap on open roads on the Beemer
(full circuit, Guv'nors bridge'n'all). It was however 4:30 in the morning,
    so no traffic.

Some **** (no prizes for guessing who) woke me saying, "You up for a lap
then". I told him (politely) to **** off and attempted to get back to
sleep. Didn't work. Once the idea was planted I *had* to do it.

I'm surprised so many people thought I'd be awake at that time of the
    morning.

I've considered doing an early lap on numerous occasions but always
opted for the extra sleep alternative.

    at the same place.

Spotted in Thursday's Cheltenham Evening Gazette:

    Wanted - Home help.
    Elderly ex-racer needs accommodating lady, 18-65, for light domestic duties;
polishing, etc. Would suit foreign student. A-levels an advantage. Fat
chicks considered with suitable references. May consider job-share for the
    adventurous. Discretion a must.
