Want to plan the TT now and get a good base camp/ hotel sorted can anyone suggest the best place to stay ? -- Vass ................................................ Now: YZF-R1, CBR1100xx-x Then: A100, MBX80, XL125, CB400, FZR600, CBR600Fv http://europebikerun.textamerica.com
Unfortunately, most hotels are booked for the following year the week the TT ends. Contact the Tourist Board for a full list. There's prolly 3 broad ways of doing it 1. In Douglas. You get the night life and the crowds here, if you like that sort of thing. Downside is you end up in a bit of traffic whenever you go out to points around the course to watch the racing 2. Somewhere around the circuit. This gives you good access to the circuit itself, usually a local pub, and, if in Ramsey, a fair few other amenities. 3. Somewhere off the circuit all together (essentially the South : Casteltown, Port Erin, Port St Mary, or Peel). Not really an upside here (unless you want to be away from the crowds), but it may be all you can find. The only hotel I could find for a group bigger than 10 in in the great DFV effort of 2001/2002 was in Port Erin. My preferred option is 2. I rented a cottage for about 5 years (during the 80s) in Sandygate, which is just off Sulby, almost exactly half way round. hth.
I *might* be doing a house share next year. Depends how things pan out with the new place. Its about 2 miles from Ballaspur, easy access to the track from there. -- Gavsta. GSXR600K1 Z750 Race Bike. I thought it was OK. I didn't think much of Douglas, and the island's not so big that it's difficult to get around. The hotel was reasonably priced, if a bit run-down. The IoM Tourist web site had a list of late vacancies in the run-up to the TT this year. This included some really quite decent looking B&Bs, particualrly in the north of the island but also round Douglas, IIRC. I don't think there'd be a lot of difficulty finding a place for next year if you book now. Personally, I think I'd aim for somewhere near - or preferably in - Ramsey. The advantages of a town, TT course on the doorstep, various stuff going on but without the crowds of Douglas.
A good breakfast is very useful on holiday: means you don't have to faff around trying to find lunch. And it's extra encouragement to drag one's lazy carcase out of bed before noon.
