One of the reviews I'd heard has an opening scene of Harry playing
with his wand under the bedclothes. Doesn't say whether he was also
using Dobby's sock or not. ...

  4. You could say the same for Gladiator, Ben Hur et al, but they turned out
    alright.

Gladiator and Ben Hur are purely fictional; the former written
directly as a screenplay, and the latter based on a Victorian novel.
The characters in both are largely fictitious.

Although Troy is based on Homer's "The Iliad", that poem itself was
based on actual events and real people.

So you can't directly compare "the source material". i.e. Gladiator
and Ben Hur were intended from the start as "entertainment"; they
    didn't just "turn out alright".

The same could not be said of the historical events surrounding the
    Trojan War.

  13. Allegedly. Though there were multiple sackings of Troy there is
no actual evidence that Mycene and Troy went to war over a woman. And
some parts of the Odyssey are clearly fanciful (people being turned
into pigs, sirens luring people to their death on rocks
etc) which doesn't bode well for the truthfulness of The Illiad.
And the archological evidence for Helen being a real person is...

  16. Indeed. Which was (in part) the point I was trying to make.. People
quite happily believe the Illiad is based on real events with
    no evidence.

Anyway. I have had a crap day today (it's not every day you
find out that your house buyers have pulled out after a month for
no real reason..) so I'm going back to the lodgings to whimper in a
    corner..
