Ah yes. "Doesn't sound too bad". Leaves quite a lot open to
    interpretation.

I've got a load of bikes that "don't look too bad" if you're interested...

  3. Was it a quote attributed to Timo?

  4. Interesting. This kind of thing has been done before, iirc; some
old small jap engine at a show. Revved until it popped, which took
    a surprisingly long time.

So the question is, why? As in, they've got an "unlubed" engine.
Is it *actually* dry, or is there sufficient oil held in small
kinks in the metal surface to lube it?

Really? You've got rid of all the MZ's then?

It was a BMF show some time back in the eighties with some SO Honda twin
IIRC. It ran for about 25mins with no oil and the throttle taped wide open.
There's still a thin film of oil which sticks to all the oily bits and that
lubes it until it burns off. I think in the one I saw it was a conrod which
failed in the end rather than it seizing. Impressive whatever.

Note that the ZX6R used in Bike had a litre of oil in it

I've not read the article[1]; is that litre in the sump, or
    "around"?

[1] haven't bought bike for months

I was following the bit about draining the sump but not the filter? so it
wouldn't be in circulation as such.

  18. Years ago when I started, I worked with a Sqr Ldr Stan Bates, a really
great guy with loads of tales to tell from WW2.
Because his group of guys had to move out of their place in the desert
in a hurry they were told to destroy all engine and burn out the
airframes of anything that could not fly out or be taken a s spares.
He had some Spitfires that weren't going any where so they removed the
props removed the governors drained the oil and ran the engines flat
out. After, as Stan said "A F*cking long time" they filled the sumps up
with water and sand and they still did another 15 minutes before they
    fell apart.

Then they torched what was left.
