Left San Antonio really late, nothing went right, had to get inspection
sticker. Started to put it off but then realized that we might have
trouble in Arizona getting inspection sticker with texas plates. BMW
dealer did us a favor and took it right away. I spent some time looking
at the R1200RT, 20k with cd changer and no top case. Definately more
    than our first house.

Son Brian and I took turns riding. I get 130 miles before reserve
    kicks in, Brian gets 112. I only travel at 60 - 65.

Saw a bunch of dead deer on IH 10. One deer was huge, about 3x as big
as any I had seen, almost as big as a horse. Saw a dead porkepine
(sp??) and a lady had stopped and was pulling quills out. I assume
they are good for something. I got passed two times by the same harley
and about 30 miles before bakersville I made a u-turn to go back for
gas. Cut across median where a sign said emergency use only (highway
patrol parking zone). I assume that was O.k. Sure enough the Harley
rider was there pumping. When I complained about getting only 130
before reserve he said he only got 80-85. We swapped riders and brian
drove the next leg, hitting reserve at 102 (I filled up at about 125
and had not had to use reserve. I think he pulled over for about 2
minutes before we caught up with him. I have no interest in visiting
courthouses in little towns in the desert so I kept it 75. Terri didnt
want to stop in Fort Stockton so we kept going until brian hit that 102
and pulled alongside and said he needed gas. I checked the GPS and the
closest gas was over 50 miles, beyond his reserve range. We find a
small gas station just outside of balmorea that wasnt on GPS fuel list
and he was running on fumes.

We got into Van Horn at 9:15 and hit the pizza hut. they put too many
jalapenos on the pizza, most we had ever seen and even my wife picked
them off. I had never seen her pick off jalapenos before. Decided not
to travel to El Paso as it was dark, cold, road construction made us
have to share with road with oncoming. Too hard to see with a single
headlight and when you get close enough behind a cage to see using
their headlights you dont get much time to move if critters pop out or
    you see an obstruction.
There was a couple of spots near some texas size hills where it got
down right cold to where my hands were stiff and I attempted to close
the hole in the top of my helmet. It was letting too much cold air in.
Then, not even 2 minutes later, we got a blast of hot air. There were
warnings about cross winds and some were blowing hot desert air it
    seems.

Anyway we will get up early tomorrow and drive to Phoenix. Hope it
does not rain. We made 440 miles today and got another 560 or so to
    get to Phoenix.

Well not bad for the first day and 440 miles isn't bad for a bike with
short range. I had the same problem with my old Virago. Because of the
small tank and our remote countryside I would have to stop for gas,
some times hourly. Hard to make good time like that.

Enjoy the rest of your trip.

    thanks Don.

I failed to mention what we were doing when I started this thread. My
wife and I took our toyoto cage up to phoenix with all my son's stuff
while he took the VStar 650 to get to that MMI school he signed up for.
He lined up a couple of job interviews ahead of time. We never go
that 91 buick running again so all he has is my wife's VStar for
transportation and he and I took turns riding while my wife brought up
the cage with the gps and all the stuff.
