My husband is more interested in building/re-building motorbikes than using
the computer, so he has asked me to post this message.

He is interested in building his own trike and would like some ideas of
where to get information/other people's ideas about this.

Any websites, books, etc very welcome. The kids are approaching grown up
and the mortgage almost paid off (only 4 years to go), he loves to tinker in
the garage and we both like riding the bikes.

Thanks to anyone in the know who replies

Two of the better forums for Trikers are

    http://www.100-biker.co.uk/forums/index.php?

    and

    http://tinyurl.com/azwwx

    NABD web forums.

the 100% forum has a bloke from the SVA people who posts to keep us
informed of the rules and work arounds, very handy.

There are ways around everything if you know what bit of paper to ask
    for :)

And yes GS 850 are a good engine for a Trike :)

Also worth noting you can't ride a Trike on a full bike licence now,
you have to have B1 on it and a full car licence :(

SWMBO was asking about this last night. The prog we were watching said it
only needed car licence. Is the B1 an add on?

    Changes to B1 Entitlement.

The law changed again in Feb 2001 so that the B1 category (which is
the trike/three wheeler entitlement) transferred from a full bike
licence to a full car licence. Like everyone else I assumed that
people who achieved a full bike licence prior to that date would be
able to continue with the old B1 provision BUT....

DVLA today and they stated that anyone riding a trike on a full
motorcycle licence after 2001 would need to take (and pass) a car test
    to ensure their B1 entitlement..!

This means that if you haven't had to renew your bike licence since
before 2001, then the B1 category which is printed on there, and
states your three wheeler entitlement, is void, ineffective and you
could be riding illegally..... Unless you are displaying 'L' plates
and the trike has only one seat.... Or 'L' plates and you carry a
qualified passenger. The alleged justification for the change was that
90% of full motorcycle licence holders also have a car entitlement.
Quite why they went to the effort and expense in bothering to change
the legislation, no one seems to know. If you want to check for
yourself then call DVLA Licence Enquiries on 0870 240 0009
and negotiate all the options until you can actually speak to someone.
    Or try www.dvla.gov.uk.
