Probably not quite the thing most of you are interested in, but, since there
is such a great wealth of knowledge here I thought I'd ask, and it's not
    really off topic ;o)

As above really, can anybody recommend a decent sensible priced builder that
can convert a 1200 cc donor bike into a 3 seat softail trike as a friend of
mine is having to give up riding soon.
Initially it would be for his lady to ride, but he doesn't think his
disability will allow him to ride much longer.
    TIA.

Depending on what the donor bike actually is, there may be an off the shelf
kit to do the conversion. It is really just a big meccano set then.
I'd have a chat with the guys at NABD. They know quite a few custom trike
    builders.
If the trike is actually being built for a disabled rider, there are many
useful ways of avoiding the SVA requirements crap as well so even if he
doesn't eventually ride it, it can be built for him.

I've been looking at the NABD site, thanks.
He's not actually registered disabled yet, but he does have a problem with
his leg after getting it smashed up years ago in bike tumble!
The donor bike, might be an early 1200 Trumpet trophy, coz of the 125 bhp
engine and I have a cheap one (on fleabay at present 270152320036!). not too
    sure yet though.
    Cheers.

I know, but I thought I'd try a rare 'near on topic' thread ;o)
    I'll have a squint.

There's a place called Boom Trikes round here. Their output looks like
the usual awful stuff, so they might be of use.

http://www.boom-trikes.co.uk/ - never spoken to them or visited, but
they claim to have done Billy Connolly's world tour trike.

I'd have thought that unless the requirements were very specific that
buying a ready made trike would have been a better, 'cheaper',
    prospect.
Getting one made can hardly be inexpensive. Alternatively maybe
selecting a trike kit and then finding a matching donor would have
    been an approach worth considering.

Buying ready made pre-owned would be cheaper. But out of the many that he
has looked out none are really what he wants. The ones that do match his
    criteria have been absolute shite.
He's specifically looking for a single rider seat with a bench rear seat.
He's not bothered about it being pretty as such. But he can't find anything
that hasn't either the bolloxed knocked out of it, or is just a pile of
    thrown together junk.
Having one built to spec is about 7 grand on top of donor vehicle. So that
would be 7.5 K if he used the Trumpet I've got on fleabay. Which he may well
do if the bike doesn't get snaffled up.

Has he considered a sidecar outfit? The only difference from a trike is
that they need a bit more skill to drive, you have to wear a helmet, and
they're much, much cheaper - this one here cost me about £1400:

Fair play, it's only about 35bhp, but look at ebay items 150147769157 and
220134762311 for an idea of what's possible.

    He definitely wants a trike.
He likes the idea of no helmet and that his Old Lady can ride it when she
wants as she doesn't have a bike license.
