I need to transport a 1983 Honda VF750F motorcycle from Melb to Perth.
Anyone got any ideas or know a cheap transport option? The radiator on it
is dodgy so riding it is not a good idea, I'm told a removalist company
will do it for $440 but I don't know their name.

Why not fix radiator and ride it?

I live in Perth and according to the current owner it has already been
patched up once before. I'm not sure if I could obtain another one from a
wreckers (and would it be any better) or a recond unit somewhere??? In any
case I don't have a base camp to work on it in Melb. It's still 35 degrees
here in Perth so it would be damn hot out there on the Nullarbor Plain. Not
really the time of year I want to risk cooking a bike out there.

Some years ago Curtis Bros Van Lines moved bikes for me. You can see
    if they are still around.

else try the usual suspects: feed "motorcycle transport" into google
    and see what comes up.

Doing the sums, on fuel alone, it's going to be approaching that
figure (fuel outside of Metro is not going to be cheap).

Add in tyres, wear and tear, accomodation/food/stops and the return
journey (flight?). Factor in the likelihood of breakdown (I'd be
putting that as likely for an old bike of unknown service history).

oh. and then there's the minor issue of these VF's chewing cams/
journals due to oil feed issues. There is/was a mod.

Getting it shipped over would be the easiest and worry-free solution.
Expect it to be several hundred dollars but that is attractve compared
with costs of riding it over and getting back.

is a journal in this context??? Also do you know what the modification
involved and any idea how much it cost?

    Because it's an elderly VF750. :)

Insufficient oil feed/pressure to the camshaft bearings and journals
    (bearing surfaces) and/or cam lobes.

No, I don't know much more than there was an issue (of some major
embarassment to Honda for what is and was an innovative engine).

If the bike has survived this long then it's probably had the
engineering rework done. Google is your friend for this.

Easterlies in Perth tend to be southerlies on the Nullarbor. Wear a jumper.

  11. I've just used Bikes-Only to get my Honda from Melbourne to Brisbane and
they were excellent. They ship to Perth and have a web site.

Try Fergussons motorcycle transport. They do door to door at very
reasonable rates up and down the east coast. I expect depot to depot
even cheaper. They will also carry other gear at (boxes of
spares/parts/etc). I have shipped several bikes with them.

  13. If you happen to know, or know of a truckie doing the run, then he may throw
it on top of his load,
if it is accessible at both ends, then he may do it for hundred or three

  14. Explaining a bit further, I bought a Bol-Dor 900 from Sydney a few years ago
and I got truck driver mate to pick it up and drop it off at my place
It cost me $50, but he only wanted a slab.
As he knew me, he didn't put a big price on the cartage.

Thus why I said no way on earth it would make it.
I loved mine, blew up 3 weeks after I sold it... quote to repair was double
    what bike cost him.
involved and any idea how much it cost?
