Transport for three wheelchairs and users.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by steve auvache, Dec 3, 2003.

  1. Hello people.

Need coach transport capable of taking three wheelchairs plus cargo and
hangers on from Sunny Essex to Wembley and back in the new year.

Finding transport fitted out for one chair is not an issue but we are
having trouble locating the same for three.

Anybody know of any firms capable of doing this?

Do they have to be in Essex?

I did a bit of volunteer work for KCCT in West London driving old ladies
to Asda to do their shopping, some were in wheelchairs.

My point is, if they can't help you then they almost certainly know
someone who can. Dial-a-ride, or are you looking for something that's
    gratis?

    Anyway KCCT's number is 020 8964 1114.

    Good luck!

No, as long as they are prepared to pick up and drop here.
    This is a euphemism?

Gratis would be nice of course but lottery money is there if needed.

    'ansum.

Nope. I really did. I fucking hated it. The job was ok but driving a
minibus all day for no reward was harsh.

It was great in the beginning but had to give it up. Still, I got a
    ROSPA certificate for my sins.
Yes, you can then have the dubious honour of telling ladies you're good
    with straps and clamps ;-)

  5. Most local councils provide this form of transport for education and
social services. If your trip was at a time when they had spare capacity
(e.g. weekends) then I'm sure a private hire could be arranged.

Several boroughs have Community Transport organisations - Hackney
certainly has one, Ealing as well.

TfL Dial a Ride might be another option to consider.

http://www.transportforall.com/index.htm might provide some clues or
    links.

I have my doubts that the boroughs, even our local one, is going to be
any use in this respect. It will be a coach trip out for a dozen people
three of whom will be in wheelchairs.

I don't really see it as council type business, much more yer private
    sector stuff I reckon.

  9. Yes but many of the Community Transport companies are "arms length" and
are free to take on private work like hires. Both the Hackney and Ealing
set ups run full size low floor, wheelchair friendly buses on Transport
for London bus routes. While you wouldn't get coach type comfort you
would get a bus with the proper facilities for wheelchairs - it will be
difficult to get a coach with those facilities - a minibus maybe.

They also run Mobility Bus services which by definition have to carry a
decent quantity of wheelchairs as well as able bodied people.

    Heh, actually no.

The community transport thing was something to do before I found a
    "proper job".

I did do a spot of painting and decorating a few years before that
    though ;-)

I will give them a try certainly. No point in passing up an opportunity
is there? But I have a feeling that anything other than the very local
ones would be interested. I'll find out.

Do a search for ECT (Ealing based)

    Here you go http://ectgroup.co.uk/transport/

I've only ever used them for tail lift servicing but they sem pretty
    good.
