  2. Actually, a properly set-up diesel is (and I've said this before) the
    cleanest engine on the road.

That's a diesel with a cat and a Continuously Recirculating Trap (CRT)
    for the particulates.

Trouble is, only trucks seem to have CRTs.

Less CO, less CO2, less NO and - unbelievably - less particulates than a
    petrol engine.

Even more unbelievably, less particulate matter than even a *gas*
    (natural or LPG) engine produces.

60 year old technology. When a bloody good plume of smoke was a sign the
thing was running and you should be glad of it.
They are; all gone to power Chinese junks.

Not all, there's a multitude of the buggers still belching out choking
    smog in central London :(

Just to add to the great diesel debate, the newer buses are much
cleaner, you can smell the diesel but it doesn't make you feel like
you're killing yourself by following one in quite the same way as the
    old RMs.

Really? I thought they'd been pensioned off by now - sometime last year,
iirc. They must be vastly reduced in numbers though.

  17. There are still a surprising number around. I took one the other day. I
*do* like them, for ShiteoldBus values of "like".

I also thought they had all been re-engined with modern diesels, too.

Depends what you mean by modern. If you mean they still belch out
choking smoke then yes, they're bang up-to-date.

They've all gone bar those left on a few routes (e.g. 13, I think).
They'll were due to all be gone by the end of the year but ISTR
reading about some being kept on 'heritage' routes.
