The bits that weren't in English.
But let me get this straight. You're complaining about the cost of
train tickets, when you'll be driving anyway?

  3. funny the hull trains website has fares that are a lot less than that
while the national rail website has return tickets valid next week for
    off peak travel at £45.

Now now Paul, you'll be accused of knowing the system or something.

  5. well I don't know it that well. I rarely travel by main line train.
Given all the web based info these days it's not too difficult to find
out what goes where and how much it costs.

The most recent excursion was a trip by SwellerRail to Haywards Heath to
buy a nice new Canon EOS300D. Other than that I can't remember the last
time I made a long train journey in the UK.

My memory could be playing tricks on me, but I believe an open, second
class return from Cheltenham to London is £76. That doesn't seem like a
bargain: works out around 35p/mile, not including the taxi fares to the
station and whatever you do in London.

You can get it cheaper, but then you can't use any of the convenient
trains, so if you want to make a meeting you have to go the day before,
which isn't exactly cost effective. And you can't use any of the direct
trains back, meaning a longer journey and a manky little local train from
    Swindon.

It seems to me that it used to be much cheaper, and I'm not talking about
the dim, distant past and the days of student railcards. Even ten years
ago a ticket to London seemed a fair price, and Birmingham was a positive
    bargain.

But not an open unrestricted first class ticket to Bangkok. Compare like
    for like.

Train travel isn't cheap if you apply the old turn up and go principle of
    twenty years ago.

bollox though innit coz it only takes into account primary fuel use and
makes no mind of what I can only presume is called secondary fuel use.

I wonder if there is a tertiary one?

  9. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember steve auvache
The lighter fuel used torching the vehicle at the end of the journey.

  10. I can get to Penrith and back in about an hour by car, less by bike.
    Any more jobs going there?

I booked my ticket to Penrith this morning, I don't travel until Sunday.
It still cost 67-60ukp. Hardly turn up and travel style arrangements.

  17. Nah, you need to shop around, I managed to get 2 of us a Hull to London
(return) for about 35 quid each. You know Hull have their own train
    company.....

Er - to all intents and purposes, yes it is. That's only three days.

Try booking several weeks in advance (as you do with budget airlines) and I
think you'll find it'll be less.
