For sure. Something like a DT175 is a great intro to off roading. IMHO
beach-scapes and dunes are the most fun outside of a full on MX area.
You have to use a dry chain or chain wax but otherwise it's a hoot.
Riding in sand soon makes you want a gixxer thou engine 'crosser though!

Weight is the great evil off road, you realise this first time it lands
on top of you and then again when you have to pull it backwards out of a
mud hole. I'd never take something like an R1200GS anywhere serious,
just getting an XT500 off one's legs was bloody difficult at times.

Have you checked the component lifes on a CRF? Piston is about 20 hours
IIRC. If you *are* determined to go for maximum oomph, get a KTM 525.
Plenty around & parts are cheap.

Have to disagree with that. They were great in their day, but it's a
bit like saying a CX500 is a great intro to road riding. Things have
moved on a lot since the DT's days.

A Gas Gas Pampera, Beta Alp, CRF230 or even the mightly Serow would be
far better bets. A good choice for more poke would be the KTM 250 EXC
EGS if you can find one. Shame they stopped making them.

Good plan - you could go trailriding with Champ on his KMX 200 then.

    I wasn't being entirely serious.

The ad says "2003 model. Used 3 times".

If you have to ride it to the chosen location that does restrict your
options somewhat. If you have room somewhere to keep a small trailer and
a car suitable for light towing duties the off-road world would be your
oyster. France, at the moment, seems still very relaxed about forest
trail use by bikes or 4wds in suitably remote areas. The only problem
then is local knowledge of good routes. Numerous and varied organised
off-road riding holidays available there and in Spain though I believe.

Apparently, and somewhat surprisingly, the South East is full of
green-laning locations. Just a case of finding someone who knows where
    they all are.

Not hugely convenient for you, but on the ridgeway around West Berks
there are plenty of places, and unlike all the stuff up north, it's
refreshingly free of big sharp fucking rocks

Trail riding is dying and is going to die because of the hooligan element.
Many years ago I rode enduro on a loud 2 stroke with very knobbly tyres
which chewed the ground up. I paid money to ride on courses that had full
approval of the landowners/forestry people. I also rode a trail bike on
trail tyres across RUPPS and BOATS. Road legal silencing and gentle pootling
were the order of the day.

Gradually peoiple like myself were joined by blokes on MX machines. They
were not road legal machines and the riders rode up and down green lanes as
fast as they could - using them as race tracks. These blokes were joined by
Landrover people who took their vehicles across tracks designed for horse
drawn carriages but which coiuld cope with a trail bike driven gently. The
tracks were chopped to ribbons. Local walkers/cyclists/horse people
complained in droves and many of the trails were closed.

I am still able to enjoy a gentle pootle across a hill on a green lane on my
trail bike. There is no way I will tell anyone which lanes are still open to
me because the racers and 4 wheel drive boys will come and ruin them. I am
sad that trail riding is dying because some people won't restrict racing to
    the race track.

The good news is that there are plenty of enduro or hare and hound type
    events to enter.

That's the main argument us trailriders put forward. These people were
already riding illegally, so what difference does it make to them if
you add another law to the several they're already breaking?

The fact is it's all down to hidden agendas. The RA want all the
countryside to themselves, & one of their biggest supporters (&
sponsors) is DEFRA. It's purely corruption.
