traffic rules?

At a cross roads with lights, the traffic was all going straight
ahead and were in the left lane.

Just before the lights the road split, an arrow indicating right
    (only).

I rode past the standing cars to the junction, and proceeded,
your honour, straight ahead when they changed.

There was a policecar waiting in the standing traffic.

In my mirror I saw the flashing lights go on and carefully went
    on my way.

He stopped me and ranted alarming about my use of the road.

"Right arrow for right turn only! I could fine you £60."

Was he justified or do you reckon he had wet the bed that morning?

So you were in a right-only lane and went straight on? And you're not
sure if you were breaking the rules or not? Bit thick, are you?

having read his post a couple of times, I think what he was trying to
say was that he used the empty "right turn only lane" to "filter" past
the stationary cars in the left hand lane, and pull up in front of the
lead car. If this is actually the case, the policeman was being a tad
pedantic. If, as you say, he actually pulled off from stationary in the
RH lane, and went straight on, the copper should have fined him.

I reckon you've got the "thick" bit correct, mind.

On what side of the cars? When the road split, where did the *other* split
    go?

Sounds like yes[1], but need more info to be sure.

[1] With the proviso that he obvously had "nothing better to do", "why was
he out catching real criminals" etc...

  6. Eh? Doesn't everyone do this if the lane is empty?

Whichever way you read it gave the copper and excuse to (a) pull out from
the queue of traffic he was in, (b) switch his wee-wahs on and (c) yell,
"Tango alpha to base I am in persuit! Repear, in persuit!", into what he
thought was his radio, but later turned out to be the toy from his happy
    meal.

It also gave him the chance to show off his uniform to somebody who was
unlikely to physically assualt him or even get lippy.

He is going to be sooooo hot when he does his boyfriend tonight, I tell you.

  8. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Howard amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
The bloke was being a prick, imho.

Of course this isn't helped by the fact you have to keep yer trap shut
when telling him to "**** OFF!!!" would be deemed appropriate.

I prefer it rough 'n' dry.

I'm sure Cane's got a suitable link to accompany that mental image.

Well I know red lights are voluntary over here, but I think UK drivers
still, on the whole, observe the red = stop rule. Either that or he waited
til the lights turned red before setting off..... In which case he got off
    lightly.

  15. Nah; he's talking out of his arse. Up until that point you were doing
    nothing more than filtering.

    So fukim.

  16. That would be a 'should', rather than a 'must'. We all get into the
wrong lanes at times. Unless you did something which was dangerous then
there were no grounds for further action.

No problem, future reference is all.

It was late when I saw him too, and I suspected he might not like
my lane discipline, so I was careful thereafter.

Next time, stick the right hand indicator on, then when you get to the
line look at the signs and then put your left indicator on.

If he pulls you, say you got in the wrong lane. "oops".
